I have owned a Maz18 Jr head and a Z best 1X12 cab for 8 years now and absolutely love it. Since we play in smaller venues sometimes, the Z cab is too big and heavy to carry around. So I found this 1X12 StangRay combo used and at a great price and picked it up. WOW!! What a sound. The owner switched out the Alnico Gold for a Jensen Neo, and I find that that it's too harsh in the high frequencies when I use my OD pedal. Thinking about switching it out. Any suggestions out there? I am more partial to a darker speaker that stays clean when I crank it up and has smooth highs when OD pedals are used. I had to purchase a Z Brakelite, the amp is really loud, but it sounds soooo good. Help fellow Z meisters!

Congratulations on your Stangray. Great amp! I like John's Creamback recommendation, seems like an excellent choice. As another alternative, I've been using a G12-65 which is the same sensitivity as the Creamback to knock down the ray's volume. The G12-65 I think is on the darker side compared to the V30 and G12H and certainly Blues and Golds. Getting the Ray's volume past noon with the right speaker and a brakelite with a strat is a beautiful thang. Speakers make a huge difference with the Stangray, have fun experimenting.

I am more partial to a darker speaker that stays clean when I crank it up and has smooth highs when OD pedals are used. Welcome rockindentist! And congrats on the StangRay~ The Creamback is a great speaker, but it is not a dark speaker and it does not stay clean when you crank it. I like my Tone Tubby AlNiCo. And I'd love to try the new Tone Tubby Nashville AlNiCo. An even cleaner speaker. Some people say the Tone Tubby's are dark, they have plenty of highend, but are very smooth & clear. I love the Tubby's with my Z Wreck. Good luck & let us know what you do~

Howdy,
My Carmen Ghia sounded great with a Weber AlniCo silver bell (Pre-Rola doping). It's 30 watts. Currently my Z 1x12 cab sports a Celestion Blue, but the SB was slightly better for clean tones. It's a slightly better "stand alone" speaker, IMHO. Good luck!

Of the speakers I have tried in a 1x12 with the Ray, the 50 watt ceramic Silver Bell seems to fit your description best. The 50 watt ceramic Blue Dog is voiced differently but is also worth considering as it is also a relatively warm and clean speaker on its own. I have not tried the Blue Dog as a 1x12 with the Ray, it is paired with a Blue in a 2x12 so that cab does not fit your description.

Welcome to the forum. The Celestion Creamback gets my vote also.

...darker speaker that stays clean when I crank it up and has smooth highs when OD pedals are used... Is nobody else gonna recommend another obvious option—the Tone Tubby AlNiCo??? Darker speaker? Yup. Stays clean when cranked? Yup. Smooth highs with OD pedals? Yup.
