I am looking for a speaker for a 1x12 cabinet that is being built. I gig mostly with a wedding band. We play stuff from Kool & the Gang, Coomodores, and Cameo all the way to Steview Ray and Hendrix. I really am looking for a speaker tha will provide max. headroom. WHat would you guys recommend? I know nothing about speakers. Tonker, Celestion, Swamp thang, or what? Help.

I am going to be running it with a Maz Sr. or a Ghia if that matters.

I by no stretch have tried 'em all, but I like a V-30 Celestion, I have used them with; Maz Jr NR, Ghia, Route 66, Z/28 and Mini Z as well as with my SF Princeton Reverb. We play from Merle Haggard to SRV, ZZ Top, Skynyrd, Allmans to Pat Green and George Straight, Tele's mostly but Strat and Lester as well. I just tried a Weber Blue Dog Ceramic 30 watt and I am going back to my V -30, just works for me.

Hello squeally, I'm using an Eminence 121 Legend in an Earcandy soverign 1-12 cab, and WHAT a great sound. The 121 is very versatile. It doesnt seem to accentuate any particular freq. range, therefore i feel it's a good choice for a wide varity of songs and styles. VERY full, balanced, tone. It will do beautiful cleans, with a lot of headroom, nice big bottom, smooth chimey highs, AND it will crunch and bark when you throw power to it. Just the right midrange for me. Sustain for days in the earcandy cab as well. I guess another plus is that it sounds amazing right out of the box! Unlike V-30's, which i get some fatigue from until there well broken in. Hope that helps a little.

Well, one more to add - the Weber Blue Dog Alnico (or ceramic, for a bit more headroom) 50-watter. It'll maintain clean headroom for what you want.
By the way - I too run a Maz 38, and usually run a 2X12 with Celestions, but like to occasionally use a 1X12 - and the Alnico Blue Dog is really nice in the 1X12.

Someone else may know where this is but there is a German website with lots of speaker clips. Found it; www.proguitar.de .

Guys-
THANKS! Thanks for all the help. So many choices. It sounds like the celestion would be a safe bet. Would a Tonker or Swamp Thang provide a little more headroom?
So you really do have to "break in" new speakers? How long does that take?

I've found that some break in in as little as 10 hours or so and others like the v-30 seem to me to get better and better sounding over quite a period of time, Subjective tho. Some of the cones are just really tight and take a while to start to develope their full tone and sustain. As far as speaker choice talk to Tim at earcandycabs.com He's extremely knowledgable about the Eminence line as well as others and will give you great input!

What about the Swamp thang?

Big bottom, and chunky mids on the "thang". I also think it's a little darker due to that voicing tendency. Very loud american type of tone. The tonker is a bright version of the swamp thang and visa versa. Both are versions of the 121 (my fave) but have more headroom due to their power handling rating and are louder. The swamp thing might be a good choice for big clean jazz tones?

...And maybe for texas blues. Buddy Whittington uses the swamp thang.

Didn't know that, cool. And yeah i could see that. My Maz 38 is pretty bright, i can imagine it would pair up well with a swamp thing, Hummmm..... ? Dont think it would be as good for say something darker like the 66 or Z-28, But who knows, sometimes so many other factors come to play, guitar, hands, etc.

That Commonwealth speaker looks like it wil lweigh a good 10#'s heavier than a Swamp Thang.

I used to gig a lot with an old Tweed Deluxe with a JBL D-120. It worked well in that amp but I don't think too many of us would like to use that kind of speaker now. JBLs definitely have kind of an oil can ping to them. I wonder what these sound like? Good price for what it is. The site says it weighs 21 pounds! How can that be!

You may want to try a Weber Ceramic Silver Bell. Of all the Weber speakers, the Silver Bell is my favorite.

The Weber Cali is a good speaker and it works well in a Maz 38. Some people like the Tonker, I put one in my Maz and just cant get comfortable with it...will probably put the Cali back in.
