Still searching for another cab to go with one or other of my Z heads - there seems to be a dearth of decent cabs for sale over here. Plenty of Marshalls (cheap and contructed of particle board) but a cab that does come up quite often is the Mesa 1x12 thiele, usally fitted with the EVM 200w driver. They have planty of bottom end but have a reputation for being bright and too focussed (which is probably why so many are for sale).
Has anyone used one? I'd fit it with a more 'vintage' driver to go with a Ghia or a Z-28. Thoughts?

I had 2 of the Mesa Boogie 1X12 Thiele cabinets loaded with 90 watt Celestions when I was doing the rackmount thing. They rocked! Very full, punchy sound. I never heard one with the EV in it.

Those little ported Boogie cabs are HEAVY lil boogers, I am a big fan of the Z 1x12 old sq. open back cabs.
I had a good 2x12 cab built a while back for real reasonable, let me dig up the info and I'll send it to ya.

I use to use a Boogie Mk III combo with an EV and a Boogie Thiele 1x12 cab with an EV. It was a very full sounding rig. The Thiele cab is very tight & focused, but with mucho low end. It is also directional, but I've used sealed 1x12 cabs that were more so. Using it with my combo gave me the best of both worlds...open & loose plus tight and focused. Very nice for the money used.

I use a Mesa 1x12 closed back. I love the sound. I actually like the sound of it better than my Mesa 2x12 cab.

Squeeley- Was your Mesa 1x12 closed back the Thiele, or a different one?

I've used a Mesa 1x12 Thiele cab on and off and for me it was best suited for use with another cab or combo to reinforce the bottom end. Most often you'd see them under a Mesa Mark series combo for that purpose. With the EV, the bottom end is unreal - very tight, huge extension and 100% "fartless". Used alone they are too much of a one-trick pony. I would not call them too bright, but I can see folks cranking the high frequencies to attempt to balance out that huge bottom end. I've used a Mesa 2 1X12 cab set-up with an open back and a Thiele both with EV's. I love the sound but it's definitely not vintage - punchy, aggressive, articulate and ridiculously loud.

Squeeley- Was your Mesa 1x12 closed back the Thiele, or a different one? It is the closed back thile. I honestly don't know what speaker is in there. It is my main cab. right now. I'm thinking of trying something else.
