I'm curious to know what the sonic differences are between Z's older, more cube-like 1x12 cab and his newer rectangular 1x12, as seen here (item #7393011209 on ebay).
Also, as a gigging musician, will a 1x12 be sufficient enough or should I go with a 2x12?

I think the old style might have some more guts to it with the larger cabinet space . I think for most jobs a 112 does just fine , larger gigs 212 or 2 cabinets works better for me

The taller one loses a bit more out the back obviously (which can be good OR bad depending), but a/b'ing them proved little sonic differences. I could only keep one and I chose the taller one because it's black and matches my Stingray, and the old style just suits me better for some silly reason . I get by fine on a 1x12 playing small clubs and parties. Played to 150 Saturday and had the SRay up about half way on volume, into an alnico Weber blue dog...no problem being heard I'm told.
