I have an opportunity to try one of these and I'm interested but I don't know much about them.
I've hear that EV's can be overly bright. Is there any truth to this? How is tthe frequency response? Is it pretty flat/even? How do they react to heavier OD? I like to use Fuzz and don't want a buzzy sounding clean speaker.
Any info is appreciated.

I have some EV12Ls that came in a G-K guitar amp I bought in the 70s. these speakers have a lot of time on them so they may sound different than newer ones. My speakers are extremely neutral sounding. What you put in they'll put out. Not overly bright at all. I like mine best in my Evans amp. For loud clean they can't be beat. They won't compensate for a bright amp or an amp that has any harshness at all, or a pedal with weaknesses. These speakers will reveal all so watch out.

I have a couple of EV' 12's from my Mesa days. They represent well although I feel they lack the warmth of the wide variety of speakers available today. They also tend to make one of your arms longer than the other 'cause they are heavy as h**l. If you want clean they have it.They also can handle alot of power-but I don't need that with my Maz18 that's plenty loud enough for all of my gigs.

I have an EVM12L that I've tried to use off and on since the 80's. I've actually sold it and bought it back! Tried it in my 1X12 Z cab, and it just never blew my dress up. A little too 'fidelic', as Z would say. And w/ that big heatsink/magnet cover on the back, it won't fit in my ol' Deluxe. Lotsa guys like 'em, though. (Like Zak Wylde w/ a hunnerdwatt JCM800, OUCH!) So I've been using the G12-100H Celestion for quite a while. My Zbest has the V30/Heritage combo in it and sounds great, but for an open back cab I like 'em w/ a little higher wattage for a little more apparent 'clean', 'til ya whack the guitar volume up. Borrowed Bluzsteel's Swamp Thang, (used it w/ the Ghia head in a smallish room, Yeow!) Bought one from Avatar, should be arriving before I leave for Europe... The search continues. Hope it sounds as good w/ my Senior head.

My EV 12s have that finned cover on the back also. One of the medallions came off of the back of the speaker and I noticed a big screw that holds that cover/heatsink on. I took it off of the one I put in my Evans amp, otherwise it wouldn't fit. Now it looks like an OEM EV that you would see in a boogie.

Thanks for the info guys.
I'm gonna pass on the EV. A guy wanted to trade me for the Tone Tubby I'm selling. I need the cash more than a speaker to experiment with.
A friend of mine is sending me a pair of Classic lead 80's to try so I'm gonna try in the Z Best. I'm anxious to hear them.
