Last night I was plinking around my studio and stated swapping amps and speakers around. Here's the arsenal that was there:
Dr Z Ghia 1x12 Greenback Combo Rivera R30 1x12 V30 Combo Rivera KHR55 EL34 1x12 V30 Closed Back Combo Rivera SUB 1 Wide Marshall 6100LE 30th Anniv Head Marshall 30th Anniv 4 x 12 G12T75 Cab.
Without going into all the details about what sounded good, I'll point out that I was surprised that the 4x12 with G12T75s sounded, dare I say, 'bad' with the Ghia and R30. In both cases, the amps sounded better running through their combo speakers (V30 and GB). More warmth, etc.... I haven't played the Marshall live in years and generally just goof off with it at home. I guess I'm used to that amp with that cab, but was surprsed how untasty the standard Marshall cab was with other amps. Maybe 'bad' is too harsh, but 'less good' would be fair to say to my ears.
Just an opinion.... thoughts?

I don't mind the GT1275s too much but they are middle of the road at best, to my ears. I've had the Marshall 4 x 12 box and one combo amp that came with one. Certainly there are many better speakers. I think you called it spot on!

Agreed. They are only so-so to my ear as well.

The 75's are overly bright IMO. I'd kill for a 4x12 with 65's tho.

The 75's have heavy lows and highs with no mids. I swapped out all the 75's in my 4x12 with Greenbacks... much better now.
