I have a 6545 and a Z best cab. I am wondering which speaker is the V30 and which one is the GB? For rock sounds what mic placements have proven good results for recording and also for live applications. Aiming for that pearl jam style of tones if that helps! Thanks!

Mic'ing amps is a pretty subjective matter... Using different types of mics, at different angles and at different places on the speaker can yield various results. So, you really have to experiment and let your ear be the judge.
That being said, there are some fairly "universal" starting points.
Take an SM57 (or any instrument mic), and point it directly at the speaker about an inch or two off of the grill. Place it 1/2 way between the dust cap (center) and the edge for the best mix of highs & lows.
After that, then you can move it around for taste.

chris, as far as figuring out which speaker is which - get a rechargeable drill & a phillips bit and take the back off (nothing too high power though). Then you just have to unscrew the cable jack w/ a little socket or wrench (gently) and you're in there. After this first time you'll see how easy it is to swap speakers if you ever need to.

Thanks for the tips! Since I am using a 6545 with master volume, what is better for tone, low/med/high volume on amp? Is a low to med. vol. amp better with a high mic preamp gain......Or High amp vol. with low mic pre gain? Thanks!

If you could only mic one speaker from the Z Best, which would you recommend? What are the tonal differences in the two speakers?

Depends on what speakers you have in your Zbest Strato. I've got a Lead 80 (bottom) and a Private Jack (top). I've found that I like to mic the speaker that has the most pronounced mids. In my case the PJ does (like a Greenback). If you have a V30 in your Zbest (most stock Zbests seem to) then I'd mic that one.

V-30 on top, G12H30 on bottom. I usually mike the G12H30, but try 'em both see what ya like best. Neither will sound bad!

Cool... I'll experiment with it. Would it also be good to have a room mic on the cab? Maybe to get some more of the low end? Channels isnt an issue, I have a friend with Pro Tools HD3.
