Hey guys I don't know much about cabs and speakers, I've always had combo's. I have 3 amps right now that I keep around. I like the different ones so I can get different flavors and not get sick of any one amp. Anyway, I want to get a cab that will match up to my (1)Maz Jr, and my Deluxe Reverb. Then next order of importance I want a cab that would be a good match to any (2) Z amp Head that I might purchase down the road. Last, I would like to hook up my old (3) Mesa Mark I without blowing it up. So I am hoping I can find a cab that will give me good results from number 1 and 2 above. Then, it would be a bonus if it would work with #3. Any suggestions on the right cab for this job will be much appreciated. D

I forgot to mention. The cabs I have my eye on now are the various 2 x 12 Z cabs

Do you favor more ambient and spacious or more tight and focused? The former would steer you towards the open back, while the latter would steer you towards the Z-Best. (shameless spam: I've got a red Z-Best I'm about to list on the classifieds if you're interested.)

Thats a good question. I think I change my mind on that as much as my girlfriend and what clothes she is going to wear ha. I have heard the Z Best cab before. It sounded awesome. It was a Route 66 going thru it. I didn't get a chance to play on it.
I know that a Maz Jr will sound good thru a Zbest or the other 2 x 12. But, would a Zbest be too much cab for my Deluxe?

Depends on what you are looking for... It's going to sound tighter and more focused than a usual Deluxe... Dare I say, maybe a little bit more 'marshally.' Obviously the open back would definitely be the cab of choice for a conventional Deluxe, but then again, a conventional Deluxe is also a 1x12, not a 2x12, so you're going to have a different sound regardless. In general the 2x12 is going to have a thicker, more focused midrange than a 1x12.

Thanks G'OlPeachPhan thats info along the lines I was looking for. I would love to take your Z Best from you. I have a couple of things lined up before I can get a cab. But, I'll be in the market for one later this year. It just depends when I get paid for some of my side programming jobs. Did I ever tell you that my Deluxe rattles like crazy? hehe. Plus if I put a distortion pedal in front of it....it sounds like...sounds like "something really bad"

dezee - glad to help (or at least try to)! I've heard a lot of those old Deluxe combos rattle -- that amps got a pretty big booty to shake things loose over time!

D You forgot 4) A cabinet that sounds like (fill in your heart's desire here). Are you looking at an external cab so you have more coverage? More focused? Less focused? Bigger bottom? Smoother mids? In other words, you don't really say why you're thinking of an external cab. I had something happen a number of years ago that might help you see what I'm talking about. I traded in my Boogie MK III on a Rivera Knucklehead 55 with their 2x12 cab. That cab is very similar to the Z-Best in that it has a bass port. It sounded awesome in the store. I took it out to the first few gigs and I was having a devil of a time with it. I couldn't put my finger on what was wrong, but I started buying all sorts of other gear to compensate. I got into a discussion with my sales guy (who happens to be a guitarist AND who happens to be pretty smart about this stuff). He observed that every amp I'd had to that point was an open back design, but the Rivera 2x12 was set up as closed back. That cab is a convertible, i.e, you can pull the back off. So he suggested I try that. VIOLA! That was it! With the back off, everything changed - the bass was back where I wanted it, the mids, the top end, and the "all around" character of an open back was there. It finally worked for me. I guess the point is, I changed without really thinking through what it was I was trying to accomplish. I ended up right back to an open back design because that was what I was used to, and that's what sounded right to me on stage. So think it through - what are you trying to accomplish? That should help steer the suggestions in a particular direction. Who knows, maybe the answer is not to spend any money!

Man you sure do ask the tuff questions haha just kidding. Its much appreciated. Let me add this point also. As far as gigging goes. I'll be using my Maz Jr just like it is 90% of the time. Also, I like how my Jr sounds anyway so I am not really trying to change that. I have always had open back combo amps so that point your making about sticking what you are used to makes sense. I guess as far as the tonal possiblities...I haven't thought about that at all. The main things I was thinking about are: 1) Having a cab around incase an amp head shows up at my door. 2) I want to move to head/cab direction if/when I get a new Z amp(might be giving/selling one of my existing amps to a friend) 3) To round out my studio for any guitar need

1) Having a cab around incase an amp head shows up at my door. Does that work? Wow, I'm going to use that! "Honest dear, it just showed up at the door! Look, since it matches that cab I got last year, I'm just going to go ahead and keep it, ok?" I wonder how fast I'll have to run....

I play my 66 Deluxe Reverb through my z best 2x12 closed back and it sounds absolutely amazing. I cannot even play it with the single 12 "SRO" thats in there right now because I am so addicted to the sound thru the cab....and the SRO sounds amazing as it is.....( BUT HEAVY!!!!!!)..though the cabinet is much more dimensional and more wide open...I don't know how else to say it.........less "pressure" at high volumes and a more evenly and tightly focused sound ...........especially in the bottom end stuff. The z best is appropriately named.......
