Black Shadow. Yes. I think the nice form factor of the cabinet is the redeeming quality in that box.
$49? Geez, that's dinner sometimes. And dinner never sounds that good the next day.....
I think I'll make a decision this weekend. I'm meeting a buddy who has some suggestions as well.....I was leaning toward something less efficient, but I might forget that request. Thanks for the info!

$49? Geez, that's dinner sometimes. And dinner never sounds that good the next day..... Not sure I can agree with that. Whenever I eat at the local Thai restaurant, I hear full bodied, girthy tone for much of the following day. Round, full low-end, cutting highs, and resonant midrange.

Do you need a wind screen?

Initial impression: very smooth speaker. Hate to repeat all of those same tired descriptive terms that people use to describe tone, because my ears may hear things differently from other people's ears, but here goes: Balanced, warm, smooth highs, no harshness, round clear bottom, nice chewy and girthy mids without being nasally; Punchy. Shiny highs without being piercing. I'm using it in a 1x12 Mazerati combo. It really seems to bring out the pure character of the amp. I tried a Red Fang a while back and while I did like some of the alnico compression and chime, it didn't seem to have the same fullness that this speaker does. I like it better than the Red Fang. You can definitely tell that there is less compression with the Tonker but it still rings and chimes nicely while also offering a really pleasing midrange warmth. And IMO it beats the pants off the V30 that came in the amp. Again, this is based on some early impressions and I've yet to gig with it so I'll post some more comments after this weekend. Thought I'd post an update to this. I've got about 8 or 10 gigs under my belt with the Tonker. All the adjectives I used to describe it previously still apply. It's a very big sounding speaker. But I'm beginning to wonder if it's too big for this amp. It sounds huge. When we play smaller clubs I'm finding that I really have to turn the amp down because this speaker is so efficient. I had a sound man tell me that my little Mazerati combo was as loud as the guy who used a half stack the night before. I'm beginning to wonder if I should go back to an alnico speaker, or find something that is a little less efficient to make the amp work a little more. I'm not after a crunchy blues tone or anything like that; I like a clean sound but I like it best when the amp is breathing a bit with a little "give" so you can get the nice harmonics and overtones, etc. So anyway, I may try another Eminence, or maybe a Weber Blue Dog.

Eminence are my Fav speakers along with Webers. The Eminence Red White & Blue is a great match to my Z28. Sounds like a really good vintage Jensen, but Bigger and more bottom.

I just got my Tonker and Swamp Thang combo in the mail today from Avatar Speakers. I'm going to pop them into my Maz Jr. 1x12 combo and 1x12 extension cab setup, replacing the G12H's. I was going to put the Swamp Thang in the combo and the Tonker in the extension cab, I may be running a Two amp setup with these speakers, Maz Jr. and Stingray head. The Maz Jr. can be a pretty bright and aggressive amp overall, I figure the Swamp Thang might round it out, give it a more American tone. What do yall think? Anyway, I'll let you know how I like em in a couple of days.

Well, first impressions after the swap last night:
Started with the Swamp Thang in the Maz Jr. 1x12 combo. First thought, woah, that's round. I noticed immediately that the amp sounded warmer, rounder and just plain bigger. I won't give you a bunh of abstract descriptions of tone, but this speaker had the exact effect I was looking for with the Maz Jr. With the Swamp Thang, I have more control over the treble and cut controls on the amp, the EQ just seems more useable and responsive now. It definitely gives that American voice to the amp. One of the reason I got an extension cab to go with the Maz Jr. was because the G12H sounded so boxey and isolated with just a 1x12. Not at all with the Swamp Thang, if I had tried this speaker a while back, I may have not needed or wanted a 1x12 extension. Very full sounding.
The Tonker, well, haven't made up my mind yet. The Maz plugged just into the 1x12 extension cab and the controls set the same as with the Swamp Thang, just wasn't as impressed inititially. Definitely a British sounding speaker with plenty of sparkle and spank, so I had to lower the treble and cut controls right off the bat. A very well rounded speaker, plenty of bottom and nice mids, but definitely aimed to give a crisp spanky sound.
Next I plugged both speakers into a Y-cable made by PCNS (thanks Todd!) and into the 4 ohm out of the Maz. An even bigger and spread out sound, and the high end sparkle of the Tonker still stands out pretty well. With both speakers, it makes for a great sonic spread, but if I had to choose one that I liked best with the Maz, it would be the Swamp Thang. Like I said, it just seems to give you more control over the Jr., and warms it up just right.
