bluzsteel, are you using those two speakers together, or did you choose one over the other?

Great article. Thanks for the heads up. A Tonker may be in my near future. Your Welcome Hollywood! I've been using a Swamp Thang & Tonker with my Maz Sr. Very nice speakers. I agree with the magazine's review of both. They play up how good the Tonker sounds when overdriven, but I also think it does just as well with clean tones. Very chimey and articulate. The tone of the top end and high mids remind me of a Celestion Blue. Both speakers sound very "big". IMHO, this is one of those rare speakers that sound great clean & overdriven. I just received a Cannabis Rex last night. It sounds OK with my Maz, but kind of small, with a boxy low end with my Ghia. I'm going to pummel it this weekend and see if it changes after breaking it in some. I hear that these hemp cones take a while to loosen up. My Tonker was stiff and slightly congested sounding before break in, but opened up after a few gigs. I've used Celestion G12Hs & Vintage 30s, with various amps, but the ghost notes from these speakers drive me nuts. I almost sold my Maz Sr., thinking the ghost notes were being caused by the amp. Just for fun, I tried these two Eminence models and the ghost notes disappeared. I've had this problem with other amps using certain Celestions. It sure is great that Emi has brought out these two new series. Now we all have an alternative to the Chinese crap Celestion has been making recently. ;D

I'm going to pummel it this weekend and see if it changes after breaking it in some. I have a C-Rex (in a Mesa 1x12 cab), and I wasn't sure about it at first, but I actually heard it breaking in over the course of a band rehearsal. After about 4 hours playing time you will hear a difference. It made my Rx come alive, and put me in a dilemma about the speakers in my 2x10 Maz combo - I like the Rex better! I was almost ready to get rid of the Rx, but not now. It has found its soulmate! Still want to try the Texas Heat and the Tonker. -Phil

The Tonker's one loud clean speaker. I use one when I need more headroom than the Weber Blue gives up. Also no cone cry or ghosting from the tonker.

I'm in too! Ordered a Tonker from Avatar Speakers today for my Mazerati. Great price, from all this talk for the money I had to check it out. The guy on the phone over at Avatar is really nice, seems like a good business. I'll let y'all know how it sounds after I get it and once it breaks in a little bit...

Madison, I almost went with a Weber ceramic Blue Dog. Is it in the same ballpark as the Tonker? I ordered a Tonker from Avatar this afternoon as well, and they said they had just sold one - must have been Blanketeers order!

ignatius, my Blue dog is the alnico version so it's considerably different than the Tonker. The BD breaks up and compresses...sounds beautiful in the Z 1x12 cab. I can run my amp volume quite a bit higher and get some righteous tones with it. I'm using it with a rock/blues band.
The Tonker is generally what I use with the country band. It is loud, in your face, tight, and immediate. A very heavy magnet. I bought it after giving up on the Vintage 30 because of wicked cone cry, and although it sounds nothing like the V30, it is equally punchy and loud w/o the cry.
I've never tried a ceramic BD, but it is on my short list of "got to have" speakers.

WOW! Got my Tonker after only 2 days ordered from Avatar. I was putting strings on my R4 LP for the gig tonight when FedEx rang my bell. I promptly put it in my 1-12 cab and right out of the box it sounded great ! My Maz18nr never sounded as sweet to me. My Keeley modded TS9 & DS1 and Comp sounded awesome.Very pedal friendly. Thanks Bluzsteel for the stellar recomendation. Here's more Karma coming your way (like you need it with your celebrity statis and all LOL) Thanks Joe

I hope they don't go overseas for their general production! That would be a shame. Where's the USA going? Japan makes the best cars already and Toyota will soon be the largest worldwide auto producer. The only electronics that are made here now are all highend audio and guitar stuff. I guess Peavy is still an american producer of consumer grade electronics but not much else, is there?

I heard on the news last night that Sony is closing down it's Walkman factory in Japan and moving production to China. We better enjoy our #1 Super Power status while we still can.

That's why the administration is trying to de-value our currency, and standard of living I might add. So we can be competitive on a global basis economically. We go down and the poorer countries come up leveling the playing field. Everyone I know struggles more financially and saves less for retirement. Hardly anyone has a pension anymore and most of the pensions already in place are struggling with their unfunded liabilities (paying out more than they are taking in). When I was kid in the 1960s and looking at the future through Popular Science magazine and television it looked like it would be a wonderful place to be. Now that the future is here it ain't so grand. Sorry to digress so far! I'll try to cut that out! Guitar player magazine reviews: They sure vary over the years, I've been a subscriber since about 1969. Mostly they love everything. Don't want to disturb the advertisers I guess.

I think alot of us have been taken in by some of the GP hype on products. I still subscribe, though. They hit the nail on the head, though, when they recomended DR Z. But what made me really want one was the Tonequest cover article a few years back.

I'm on the fence about Tonequest too. I've been subscribing since day one and for some reason it irritates me sometimes. I don't know if it's the authors style or what exactly. Also either he doesn't report on things that don't sound good or he's a hyper also. One thing I dislike about his reviews is he hardly mentions an amp's clean tone, only it's distortion mode. This makes the review onesided IMO. On the other hand, I have learned more about some products than I ever would have from any other publication. I guess that's why I keep forking over the big bucks to subscribe. I do think it's too expensive though. I subscribe to some antique car magazines that don't take advertising and they have 3 times the content for 1/3 the price so somethin' ain't right.

That does it, I'm ordering a Tonker today for my Mazerati. Let us know how it works out - I'm thinking of getting one too! Initial impression: very smooth speaker. Hate to repeat all of those same tired descriptive terms that people use to describe tone, because my ears may hear things differently from other people's ears, but here goes: Balanced, warm, smooth highs, no harshness, round clear bottom, nice chewy and girthy mids without being nasally; Punchy. Shiny highs without being piercing. I'm using it in a 1x12 Mazerati combo. It really seems to bring out the pure character of the amp. I tried a Red Fang a while back and while I did like some of the alnico compression and chime, it didn't seem to have the same fullness that this speaker does. I like it better than the Red Fang. You can definitely tell that there is less compression with the Tonker but it still rings and chimes nicely while also offering a really pleasing midrange warmth. And IMO it beats the pants off the V30 that came in the amp. Man, I'm just diggin' my tone these days. It's so nice to be able to plug in, twist only two knobs (thank you Dr. Z!) and have such full, warm, gorgeous tone fill the room. Gotta try this rig with an Airbrake sometime... Again, this is based on some early impressions and I've yet to gig with it so I'll post some more comments after this weekend.

Hm, this Tonker you speak(er) of....
Seems like it might be a nice replacement for whatever's in my Mesa 1x12 open-back cabinet, the one where the speaker label says something like "Black Widow" or something?

Seems like it might be a nice replacement for whatever's in my Mesa 1x12 open-back cabinet, the one where the speaker label says something like "Black Widow" or something? I have a Black Shadow in my Boogie (made by Celestion), and it's my least favorite speaker in the house. The Tonker is a better choice IMHO...I bought mine at Avatar for $49.00 plus shipping, so not a lot of risk buying one.
