Any advice on the best way to break in these speakers? Plug it in and play the Wreck doesn't have to be wound up to sound great. Mine spends a lot of time with the volume at 9:00......somewhat clean, but still glorious. Keith

Well...I was very excited, however, not what I was hoping for. I plugged in the Zwreck tonight and 2 annoying issues: 1) prominent hum at all levels of the volume knob - seems to increase as the bass knob is increased; 2) a loud white static hiss kicks in at noon on the volume knob and gets louder as the amp volume is increased up from there. The noise is so loud that when amp is in overdrive I can still hear the hiss. When I plug in my Princeton Reverb in the same outlet, no hum or hiss all the way to 10 on the volume knob. Both my tele and strat have the Illitch Electronics Noise cancelling system (the ones used by Shur guitars). Any thoughts?? i will call Humbucker Music in the morning for assistance. Given the price of the amp I truly hope we are not dealing with tube or other issues (I know it can happen but disappointing after investing 4K). Welcome your thoughts....

Sorry for your troubles.......but you can bet it's a tube. Humbucker and Dr Z will make it right!! You can count on that. Hang in there....you're in for a treat. Plug the Princeton into the Wreck cab while you get the head sorted out. You may want to email Dr Z and he may help you before morning.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble. Even though Dr Z hand selects the tubes, they can go bad. I had one fail shortly, as in a few hours of play time, after getting my new ZW. Doc took care of it promptly. No issues since.

Thanks MarkT and Doctorice. Any suggestions on what to do? Do I send the head back to Humbucker or directly to Dr. Z? How did you resolve your issue with the tubes? So glad to have a forum with you guys!

eagle2x, I would contact Jake at Humbuckers let him know the problem. Then Jake and I will sort out the best and quickest way to make you happy.
BTW guys, I use the most expensive currant production 12AX7's in the Z-Wreck, they are the TungSol's. Wonderful sounding tubes very Vintage and Detailed . But a small percentage of them do HUM after short useage, too bad they are the lowest fail pre-amp tube I buy. Most I can catch in house, but some do slip though.
Just by a short post I can't tell for sure if it is a TungSol at fault, but my spidy senses think so.......
Sorry for the inconvience, I wish all the tubes I buy and use lasted for ever, but that's not the case for me or any other amp builder.
We'll get your Z Wreck fixed up.
DR.Z

Sorry I wasn't at the shop when you called. I'm working from home today, but I just got the call from Josh. Already on top of it! Sounds like a bad tube to me as well. It's not common that a new tube goes, but it does happen. And unfortunately tubes don't care if they're in a cheaper amp or a Z-Wreck. Don't fret over it (yes... pun intended). We'll get you squared away. I'll get with Z on this pronto. I have your contact info and I'll be in touch Monday morning.

eagle2x, I have a suggestion that may help me expidite this repair.
Could you or would you pull the Phase Inverter from the Z Wreck, that is V3 the last pre-amp tube in the row next to the output tubes.
Now power up the amp. Has the Hum completely gone?
This would greatly help as it will break the amp in half as far as the problem is concerned.

Hi Dr. Z. Sure. I turned around the head and removed the back cover to access the tubes. Am I correct in assuming that of the 3 preamp tubes v1 is all the way to the left, v2 is in the middle and v3 is somewhat tucked behind the first power tub on the left of the power tube row?

Dr Z: I removed the v3 that I identified above and powered up the amp. The Hum is STILL there, but a little muted. Interestingly, problem 2 - the loud white static noise that kicked in at 12 on the volume and got louder up to full volume - is gone with the tube removed. I hope this helps.

Sounds like a weak EL 84 in the quad. I went into the shop Saturday just to test up and match quads of the 6N14N ( select Russian Military NOS EL-84's used in the Z Wreck), just in case I needed to send some out Monday.... DR.Z
