I want to fit an Brakelite to my newly acquired 1974x for home use as my hotplate is 8 ohm. I have tried it ,with amp on 8 ohm into the hotplate then into the onboard 15 ohm speaker ,but would prefer to use a unit thats ok with the 16 ohm out. Is there any benefit in purchasing the S/A with its two outputs or is it ok to run a Y cable to 2x 16 ohm speakers(or 2 x 8 ohm for that matter) with the standard Brakelite. What I have proved to myself is that the aged G12M in the 1974x is where most of its distinctive tone is coming from as by removing the valve cage I managed to squeeze in my heritage G12H30 low res and though its sounds good its different(more modern marshall sounding) and moves the point at which you get speaker breakup involved in the equation. The stock speaker breaks up very early in a nicely controlled manner.

I don't see why you couldn't run a Y-cable to 2x16 ohm cabinets like that if you needed to... Just an FYI, pursuant to some discussions here a short while ago, we (I) believe that most of the time, whenever the Brake Lite (regular or S/A) is not on "0", the amp pretty much "sees" near 8 ohms, regardless of the speaker load that's downstream. I think this is why the Doc has recommended using the 8-ohm tap on vintage amplifiers even with a 16-ohm speaker load. So—and this is just my opinion—I'd go ahead and plug 'er into that 8-ohm output if you plan to be using the attenuator most of the time. Might help protect your output tranny in the long run.

Fitted a brakelite to my 1974x yesterday after fitting a new speaker cable as the stock one does not reach the brakelite. Very nice with just a couple clicks on and the amp on 10 just enough to take the edge of the volume buts still retains that Marshall tone.
