Just saw Michael Burks at Famous Dave's in Minneapolis. He used a Delta 88 with 2x12 cab and a Maz Sr. 2x12 combo. I know during his major, crankin' leads he was playing through the Maz, and sounded fantastic. I'm not sure when/if he used the Delta 88.
He played a Flying V and Les Paul with Voodoo pickups. His effects were a wah of some sort, Boss tuner, silver Klon Centaur and some gray, stereo Boss pedal (Delay maybe?)
If you like hot blues, check this guy out. He and the band were great and hung out and chatted with people afterward. They seemed really nice.

WONDERFUL player and a super cool guy. I think over the next few years, he's going to grow even more into "guitar hero" status. I mean, he already is to a lot of folks, but eventually he'll be more "common knowledge" amoung the musician crowd. Yeah, +1 oh what doobieK said, check Big Mike out when you get a chance...

Sad thing is, the place was 1/2 empty. Word needs to get out about Michael or the venue needs to do a better job of adverising him.
He had a Strat clone, custom made with his name inlaid on the fretboard that he went on about after the show, but he never played it. I didn't ask why, but I do wonder. It is a beautiful guitar.

Actually I'm going to see Michael tonight in Davenport Iowa. I'll look into the custom made Strat for you. I know he has had a couple made for him by Michael Moore of Mooretone guitars. He was playing the first one built for him alot the last 2 or 3 times I saw him. However he did tell me a couple of weeks ago that he was really back in love with the sound of his V's. He likes to bounce back and forth though, so it was probably the case of what was feeling good that night. With the Mooretone guitar though, he's let me strum on the first one he had, and I must say it was a pretty good feeling strat. One of a few Strats I've played that I could really feel the vibrations of the body through to my fat gut. I'll give you a review of tonight, but usually I'm biased:)

My Wife and I have went to see Michael twice in 3 weeks. I don't know how much he'd like me to give away, but actually he plays through all 3 amps at the same time, and all the "grind" you hear I'm pretty sure is comming from the Delta 88's. I've sat in with him a time or two and have used the Maz 38 and the Delta 88 individually on different occasions and the the Maz 38 is set up quite clean. Pedal board is as you've stated, and is a boss Delay pedal. Here is a picture from this last weekend in Kirksville, MO where I had a good time getting my butt kicked by one of my guitar heros/friends. He's playing one of his Mooretone strats, and I think he currently has 3 of these. But I may be mistaken. (and that's me with a Jon Kammerer custom made guitar. He is a very nice guy and the band are some of the friendliest out there. Spent alot of hours talking music with "Popcorn", John Davies, and Wayne Sharp.

Very cool. Yep, it WAS Mooretone and the guitar in the photo looks like the one he had when I saw him. Interesting you mention he plays through all of the amps at once. Now that you mentioned it, I don't remember seeing a switcher.
Must have been fun playing with him! What a thrill that would be.
I got the feeling we could have stayed and talked with all the guys in the band all night and they would have loved it.
I will be seeing him next time he comes around town, for sure. Thanks for the review and info.

Michael-
Hope you don't mind me asking you a question here in the Z forum. I'm curious about some of the tones on your cd "I Smell Smoke." I love the lead tones but the clean sounds are also very "big" sounding. Are the clean tones from your Maz Sr? Do you only use Z's in the studio?
Also, when you coming back to Humhrey's in Huntsville Alabama?

Michael now has an ongoing thread in the "Ask the experts" area. This way you can have a place to ask him things and he now has a place to find questions to him where he does not have to look everywhere.

I sold my other two guitars after getting the Mooretone.

I'd never heard of Michael until I bought a my first Z and read about him on the delta 88 section of the DRZamps.com web page. After checking him out on youtube I just love his tone. Michael you seem to squeeze every ounce of tone out of whatever you are playing be it Strat, Paul or V!
I'm searching as I write this for some of your stuff on cd. keep on pickin, you got one big fan here.

Well, My wife and I went to St. Louis last night to see Michael Burks(4/14). Let me say first that I've been a friend/fan of Mike's for some time now. And last night's show was probably a top 2 in all the times I've heard him. He is also the proud papa of a SRZ-65!! What a sound folks. I think maybe it was a little bit brighter than his sound with the Delta 88's but maybe a bit clearer because of that... Anyway if any has been wanting to hear a SRZ 65 and he's around, I have a feeling he'll use this set up for a while.

Saw MB in SF last year. Had the 88 and the Maz Sr. So that's it--both at the same time. Now, I get it!

I just finished seeing Michael Burks at St. Louis Big Muddy Blues Festival.
His "LICKS" via his SRZ-65 just ripped a hole in my side.
Why can't I play like Mike?

I caught the end of Michael's set at the Ottawa Bluesfest this summer. So lefty, he was in Canada! As I was walking in and started to hear him I thought to myself, "self, gotta check this guy out". Unfortunately I only got to see a couple of songs but I hope Michael comes to Bluesfest again next year. I'll be there for the whole set!

I downloaded the Iron Man album the other night on iTunes, and have listened to it front to back several times since. I'll be going to see him at BB's in St Louis in a week or two...hope to meet you there, Michael! BB PS--a buddy and I have a blues band put together, and I think most of the songs on Iron Man are going to be on the setlist. Thanks!
