I am a big fan of the Nashville EZDrummer Kit. I also like the tone of the Garageband kit too. Are any of you guys using a midi control to trigger that stuff on your own? I could probably not do anything near as good as the clips but I like to think I did it all so see where I'm going with this.... I dont want to buy a drum set so this would be a compromise...
Anyway, anybody have a favorite EZDrummer Expansion set? Anyone bought that Roots kit? Americana? I'd like to know what you think of that versus Nashville.

I've got a lot of them. The Twisted Kit is pretty wild and the Latin Percussion is Super Useful even if just for tambourine/shaker stuff.
I use a lot of their patterns and tweak them. I've also used the cheapest Roland pad kit with great success. It plugs in via USB and you are off and running. Crazy simple. Once the stuff you've played is in there you can tweak it.

i have toontrack and BFD2, like 'em both. i just bought the smallest of the roland v-drums sets to use to trigger them because i can never *quite* find the pattern i want, but am having some difficulty getting the recording setup to 'see' the v-drums. grrrr... i know i'll figure it out eventually, but i'm frustrated by it now.

Hey Decayocaster, are you on a Mac? What software are you using? Are you hooking up the V-Drums via MIDI or USB?

hi roscoenyc / eric -
yep - a mac mini / os 10.6 running presonus studio one v2. lynx aurora8 A-D / D-A to the mac via FW.
i've tried running the MIDI out from the roland v-drums HD3 to the MIDI in on the lynx, no luck. also the MIDI out from the HD3 to a MIDISport 2x2 to either the mac via USB, or to the lynx via the MIDI in. still no luck. neither way does studio one or BFD 'see' the v-drums, though at one point there seemed to be some signs of life from the high hat pedal of all things.
i wrote to roland tech support and got back a fairly silly response that convinced me not to hope for too much from them. so i figured i'd bite the bullet and call sweetwater support to see what they could do sometime soon. but if you have any suggestions for things to try ("whack it on the right side with a sneaker") that'd be really neat. and if not, cool too, of course. thanks!

Sweetwater tech support is the best. In my experience they will get to the heart of the problem no matter what it is (the Roland, The Lynx, The Mac)
You should look at the mac "Audio Midi" thing that's in Utilites and see if the Roland rig shows up. You should be recording to an "instrument track" if you are in protools and you should look at the I/O panel in Pro Tools.
I bought my new UA Apollo from Sweetwater specifically so I could have access to their tech support and they already helped me out.
Good luck!

Let me know how you do with Sweetwater tech support. Tuesday is usually a good day to call!
Jimbo record was a great time.
Check out the first single. There's some Dr Z on there. Record comes out in Jan vinyl too.

if ya see something wicked don't go looking in its eyes... thanks! i was about to call on friday, messed around a bit first, and got it so BFD can see the roland in standalone mode, but still not in plugin mode. so that's hopeful, and we'll see what sweetwater can do to pull me over the finish line.

I use an Alesis DM6 Session kit to trigger Superior, EZ, Reason... Couldn't have been any easier to setup. USB>PC>Reaper>Virtual Instrument or ReWire>Rock n Roll It's very cool to play along. Endless possibilities, really. When not in the mood to play I use my M-AUDIO Axiom. Dig the Toontrack stuff, I use Vintage or Jazz most often. I like to separate each track for easy eq down the line. Reason has some nice percussion too, fwiw.

EZ Drummer 2 First real revision on EZ Drummer is out now. I've been a fan since it came out. There's a lot of great stuff in the new version. New drum kits, many new 'mix options'. My favorite part is called "Tap to find" where you tap in a beat then it searches for all the related patterns so you don't have to go looking through all the patterns. There's also a "song builder" that has typical arrangement stuff like AABAAB. If you already have expansion packs they are all updated too. I like it a lot already. They also have support for all the electronic kits built in. $99 upgrade price. www.toontrack.com/product/ezdrummer-2/
