Hey all:
I've been curious about these amps since they were first announced. One came in to our local Long and McQuade (someone ordered it and returned it) and it was sitting on the floor today. it was a 1x12 combo with a greenback.
I grabbed a Tele and spent a few minutes with it, and found it hard to send into overdrive. it stays VERY clean, in both high and low modes.I know the are known for lots of headroom, but i couldn't get it to drive much at all (in a store full of customers, IIRC i got it up to 12-1 o'clock)....
Can someone tell me when this amp hits a sweet overdrive? I have a Z Wreck that is too loud for what i need it for, and was thinking the M12 maybe the way to go. I don't like using overdrive pedals into a clean sounding amp but rather like to supplement the amp's overdrive...but if i have to attenuate this amp to get some overdrive it's just as well i continue to use the Z wreck!

As you may be aware of, this amp was developed for a specific purpose - to provide a great amount of head room in a low wattage for pedal use. It can get some slight OD/Hair but has to be really cranked to do so. Also, it depends a lot on where the EQ controls are set. The bass and treble knobs act like normal EQ controls up to 12:00. Past 12:00 they actually add gain and boost in that respective frequency range. If all knobs are past noon the drive will come on quicker but it still has to be turned up quite a bit.

jessim's comments are right on. Volume may need to be up to 2 o'clock or higher and you need to use the tone controls to assist. The M12 won't overdrive at the same volume settings as a MAZ (EL84 output) or Z-28 (EF86 front end).

Yeah, I dropped by today and gave this amp a whirl. It's the only time I've seen a new Z on the floor at this shop It was exactly as I expected. Stayed very clean well up on the wick. The low/high toggle made a noticeable difference at low volumes. I can see this thing being great at low volumes with, say, a Paisley Drive. If this was a head and red ;D I would have been tempted to leave the store with it. Sadly, it was a combo Seems like a great basement dweller amp Keith

Yeah it's suppose to stay clean. With HB's you can get it to drive a little bit tho.

Some may think this amp is for the home/studio, but mine is made for gigging!
