It's been since 2006 that I upgraded my home recording computer and interface. I'm really looking forward to it. Computers are much, much faster and can handle much more RAM and there the latest generation of converters are sounding much better. On top of that Thunderbolt promises wicked fast exchange of data. My Mac source says the new iMac will get a quiet release this month. It's been 526 days since the last iMac redesign. I plan on getting a large one and loading it up with at least 8 gig of RAM, possibly with a SSD and a traditional drive in there. I've been very excited about the UAD Appolo interface. It's a powered box that hosts it's own processing and UA's fantastic plugin format. The really great part is that it allows you to apply plugins on the record side. Has great converters and clock and is the first interface to offer Thunderbolt as an option. www.uaudio.com/apolloHopefully the new iMac will be released by the time I get back from Iraq and I can get the whole thing sent over here!

I have only recorded on "stand-alone" type DAWS-Roland, Korg, and Boss. I've had GREAT results, but I'm wondering if the learning curve on Mac recording programs are worth it-I know I'll miss the faders, though. www.reverbnation.com/russellcarl

Got the Apollo Qaud with the Thunderbolt card yesterday. Running it w firewire now till the new iMac comes out in December. Researching Thunderbolt hard drives now. Boy the clock and convertors on this thing really sound great.

I put a solid state drive in my computer and it flies. I wish they made them with more memory that I could afford. Just 120 gigs but it made a huge difference.

I'm researching Solid State Drives w Thunderbolt for my new rig. Not a lot of 'em out there. I don't need a really big drive to work on.

Yea I send all data to my bigger drives. So far I like the SSD. It puts everything up quickly and boots up in half the time if not more. I thought I would use Sonor X2 for the DAW. It doesn't slow it down either. It seems to have helped the processing speed and I haven't had a glitch yet. I have only had it for 2 wks. so I've got a little time before I know what it really does. When I see how well they work and give some time for the price to fall I will go to a larger drive but right now the larger are out of my range and are unproven. I also know the cost will change when they become more popular ;I hope.

Checking with a lot of audio friends I decided to get a 7200rpm Thunderbolt drive. I also grabbed the last generation 27" iMac. The place I get Macs from will give me a very good trade if I decide to move to the upcoming machine within the next year.
Took me a couple days to get everything straigtened out after moving from the old computer. Various authorizations and the like. Whole thing is really humming like a top now. I forgot just how fantastic sounding the UA Plugs were.

Nice rig Eric! It's a lot of work but it's always a fun day after getting new computer gear set up... You'll like the SSD.

Boy this Apollo interface w it's own quad processors and the thunderbolt connection is crazy good. I could not be more pleased. It's a totally unique box. You can put plugs in on record (cause the processing is coming from outside the host). Awesome.

The rig is running fabulously. Also I heard from an elf that I may be getting an actual camera for Christmas which means less funky iPhone pics for you guys.

Thanks. I'm gonna bail on the Lacie Little Big Disc thunderbolt drive. It's loud as hell. 16 gig of RAM vs the 3 in my old iMac is a big deal. This thing hums.
