Just got a Mini Z, which I am really enjoying so far. Lots of different tones in there, despite the simplicity. I got the head and am playing it through a 1x12 Z cab with the G12H30. I dig the sound.
This is my first head/cab amp, and I do like the Mini half stack! However, I do like combos because I can move them around easily, take them to different rooms, or travel with them. I'm wondering if I might like to order the 1x10 Z cab and convert it to a combo.
Has anyone played both configurations? What were the differences and which did you like better? Has anyone gone from head/1x12 to combo and regretted the move?
Thanks in advance!

my son has a combo with a 1x10 red fang in it. Really sounds great and its nice and portable. We also had the tranny upgraded and that made a real nice difference in the clarity and punchiness of the amp.
I think a head and 1x12 would sound real nice though

I just kept mine as a head. I think it gives more options. Heck you could plug into a 412 if you wanted. I have a smaller 112 that I use together for portability. But I have the dr z 210 as well. Some day I'll buy a cable from Todd and try them both at the same time. I suppose you could try the 110 combo and still plug into different speakers too.

Yes. Run mine through Doc's 1X10 with a Red Fang...awesome tone.

Well I did end up doing the conversion. I like having the option to use it as a combo or still plug it into the 1x12 if I want. I'm not super crazy about the Ramrod, it's a little harsh sounding to me. I don't want the high efficiency of the Red Fang, so I'm considering trying the 10" Greenback.

The ramrod takes a bit to break in. Driving it with the 8 watts of the mini will take a bit longer. If you have another amp that is more powerful hit it with some loud signal from it. I think the ramrod is rated at 70 watts. A greenback should sound good with it if you go that route.

+1 on the Greenback 10. Using it in my 1x10 Z cab with Carmen Ghia. Tames highs well too. Super quiet at 95db, but sounds big like a 12.
I may be pickier about tube rattle than others, but I prefer having the head and cab. Every el84 amp I have ever owned in combo format (including 3 Z's) has had pretty bad el84 rattle. I would think the little 10 cab with the tubes that close to the speaker would be even worse. I could be wrong, many people enjoy the small combo, but when I can hear rattle coming through my monitor at gigs, it's too much. (yes, tried all the fixes, from tube dampeners, herbie rings and new tubes, blah blah) but the head and cab format is PERFECT. I have zero noise and rattle. Love my Ghia and 1x10!

Just put the Greenback in. Man does it sound good! Tames the fuzziness quite a bit. I may miss the extra headroom sometimes, but I can always plug it to my 1x12 with G12H30 if I want louder cleans.
