Got a great deal on a 6545 from Dave's Guitar Shop a few weeks ago and have finally felt well enough following my surgery to get it set-up. I knew it needed some help as, although it is in great shape cosmetically, it did not have the same mojo as the one Mike let me try when we did the Remedy, RS EX swap last month (more on that later). So..... armed with the arsenal listed below, I went to work (and a lot of work it was) TUBES - EF86: Svetlana
- NOS G.E.C. EF86 (still waiting for the NOS Tesla to come in)
- Current Production 12AX7: EH, Svetlana, Sovtek, Tung-SOL
- NOS 12AX7: Sylvania Long Plate, Mullard, RFT & RCA Grey Plate (still waiting for the Brimar)
- Current Production EL-34: SED Winged C, Svetlana
- NOS JAN Philips/Sylvania 5AR4 (Still not in)
- KT77: Gold Lion (Still not in)
CAB'S - 2X12 Z-Best
- 2X12 Convertible Cab
- 1X12 Convertible JDesign Cab (Hemli's from the Buy & Sell - thanks brother)
- 2X10 JDesign Convertible Cab
12" SPEAKERS: - (2) G12M(2) G12-65
- (1) V30
- (1) G12H
- (1) Tone Tubby Red Alnico (Still not in)
- (1) Tone Tubby 40/40 (Still not here)
- (2) Dr. Z 10"
So here's the question my brothers in tone........... Based on the above arsenal, what do you think I ended up liking the best for my Classic/Blues Rock and Blues Band to go with my Maz Jr (C-Blue & G12H) and EZG-50 (2x12 G12-65)? I am still awaiting delivery of the Tesla EF806, Gold Lion KT77, Brimar 12AX7 NOS Rectifier and the (2) Tone Tubby's. looking forward to trying out the missing links and to hearing how the 6545 sounds with the H-bomb. I'm thinking my final selection might possibly be changing (pic to follow).......

OK, since no one want to play here's what I ended up with... V1: NOS Mullard 12AX7 V2: NOS RFT 12AX7 V3: GEC EF806 V4: Sovtek 12AX7 LPS V5-V8: NOS RCA EL-34 Biased at 36ma 2 G12M in a Dr Z Z-Best Sound great. Big, full, fire breather with great note to note definition with single coils and humbuckers. Band mates were very happy. I got home from band practice only to find the NOS Brimar 12AX7, Gold Lion KT-77 and JAN Phillips 5AR4 Rectifier had arrived. Looks like I'm gonna be busy again Friday..... Here's a lousy pic from my new Galaxy SIII..

Wow. Cool collection.
I think If I had that behind me, I would have one of those Voodoo 4 amp selector stomps at my feed. What more would you need? (except a roadie to load it all in and out for you).

Likely 4-ish at my office if you're interested Mike...... I made it over to Steve's after a long, painful stop-and-go driving all the way to Steve's place! I hate holiday traffic!!! We ended up with a NOS Mullard in V1, Brimar in V2, and some NOS Gold Lion KT77s for power tubes - all I can say is WOW! Steve had the 6545 just singing!. Not that it sounded bad before the swaps, but this combination just brought the amp to life. Great top end and thick bottom - no flab at all there! He was playing through a Z-best loaded with greenbacks. We set the bias of the amp at ma 36.5/34.8. Feel free to correct me if I got any of this wrong Steve - it was a tough evening. Did you ever find the cap?

Yeah, Mike FINALLY made it. I almost called the local constable to track him down..... First thing we did was pull the RFT from V2 and slip in the Brimar. This really seemed to make the amp more alive.....Cool! We then decided to swap the NOS Mullard in V1 and the Brimar in V2 around. Fired that baby up and.......nothing! It was like there was no life in the amp at all. OK, that was a quick experiment switched V1 and V2 back and now its time to get jiggy 'wif it. Pop in the NOS JAN PHilips 5AR4 rectifier, popped in the Gold Lion KT-77's biased her up (would have liked to have gotten a little close match but couldn't) and DAAAAAAYAMM. This thing turned into Mr. Hyde. It was big and bad with great harmonic overtones and string definition before. The Gold Lions just took it that much further with an even bigger sound. Definitely a keeper. Kept the NOS GEC EF806 and Sovtek 12AX7LPS in. Mission complete. Thanks a million for the help MIke and no I did not.........yet!
