Hi Guys. What sort of sounds are you getting with your amp in Triode switching. If I set Volume and Master at 1 oclock or higher with the bass pretty much up treble at 12 it sounds as if the speaker is flapping / distorting. I have also posted in the trouble shooting section to see if there are any answers.

This is the standard combo with the celestion G12H 30. To eliminate the speaker from the problem I used my DrZ 1 x12 cab and there was no difference. Played in Triode mode it sounds real nasty.

Won't triode mode give you that raunchy, tweed-y style distortion by design? Did you try turning down the bass when going from pentode to triode?

my triode mode is a bit looser sounding than the pentode mode but I would not call it flapping, I do notice differences in the break up when I use hi or lo imputs. My humbucker loaded Parkers like the lo input better where my tele likes the hi input

Thanks guys. What sort of volume Master setting are you using? I tried all sorts of settings and anything above 1 or 2 oclock on the volume / master resulted in a machine gun sound followed by horrible distortion. I was also surprised that so much bass was needed to quell the very toppy sound I was hearing. I played every combination I have through it i.e, s.coils, P.90s , Humbuckers. All sounded very chimey ala Dr Z as expected but I can't believe how dissapointed I feel. This problem is probably a quick easy fix with a new tube but new out of the box very dissapointing. I may add the 1st DrZ Maz 38 I purchased 12 months ago needed to be returned with a Tube problem. It may appear that the quality of tubes leaves a lot to be desired?

Have you been able to try switching out the EL84 yet? If this doesn't help, then try switching out the preamp tubes, one at a time, with a known good tube.

tube quality is an issue for all of us, I stood in the QA at the shop and watched Don pick up 4 different preamp tubes that were bad right out of the box. The Doc works real hard to find us tubes for our amps that sound great and are reliable . . . . its getting harder. Call your dealer or the shop, they should be able to hook you up if a tube is your problem Todd

Hi prspastor. No I did not try switching tubes because I took issue with this being a new amp out of the box. It had been used on the shop floor as I was told it sounded OK there. I am surprised at that and suspect it was tried in only pentode at any volume and perhaps only a cursory glance into the triode where I suspect at only low volume. I cant believe there is any serious issue with this model as there would be a lot of complaints explaining this issue, and there are not! I am however curious to find out what the problem is and not wishing anyone a problem hoped there was a difinative answer. But life is to short to dwell on it if the answer is not straight forward. Like you guys I suspect, I would rather be playing instead of concerning myself with tech issues. So, a new Maz 18 NR is hopefully on the way when this one ends up back at the music store tomorrow
And hi Todd still using your lovely cable to hook up my Ghia Head and two of Dr Zs cabs. We wish you well here in the UK. Yes there are issues with tube quality this is the second new amp with tube problems but I love the Zs..........

I thought John Priest was going to stock your bits? Funny because I was only thinking today I should have asked him to send a Y cable, male and female to hook up this Maz 18 combo amp he is sending to replace the Maz 8. If he's not stocking them I may have to bother you again.
