So my church has been getting some ridiculous feedback lately and really nothing has changed too much, so we're having a hard time figuring out what the deal is. You can hear the feedback start from a really quiet mid tone feedback all the way to the point where you have to yell over it and when you look at the board, none of the channels signal indicators are going nuts and when you mute everything, it keeps going. I'm getting frustrated because i can't even find the source. Can anyone help me out? Has this happened to any of you? this just started a few months ago. Any help would be great. thanks
Matt

any more details? Do you have active speakers? Is it coming through the mains or the monitors or both? Do you have effects in your setup? Have you tried unplugging everything and re-connecting the entire system?

The speakers are not active. We're running wide throw speakers to cover a wide shallow room. The feedback appears to be coming through the mains. I have not experienced it coming through the monitors. The only effects we are running in the setup is a little tiny almost inaudible amount of reverb. We haven't tried disassembling everything but it may be time to try just to clean up a little. The best i can bet is that one of our wireless mics is malfunctioning. I have noticed a signal sometimes appearing from one of the wireless units even when the microphone itself is turned off. I know it's gotta be coming from something that is relatively inactive since it starts really quietly and doesn't really seem to be coming from a specific noise, but it is always the same tone.

Sounds like there is some sort of loop somewhere. I would try to redo all the wiring and do it one line at a time for everything. You'll track it down. Something is in the wrong place.

Are you running any lights? What's the power source, distribution or direct?

Kick and floor tom mics often do weird things. It could also be a tube failing in an amp... or a boost, drive or compressor pedal reacting with an amp.

the only lights we're running are the house lights, no fluorescents except in the sound/production room. the power source for all of the sound equipment is a power conditioner and sequencer. We currently don't have a drummer and are not running drum mics and we're currently entirely amplified acoustic and keyboard. we have started having some issues with the keyboard. the display illumination is flickering.

Did you do any trouble shooting at all? Check all the wiring? Plug things in one at a time?

Eric's on the right track retrace your steps it may be time consuming but beneficial in the end. The keyboard display flickering is odd but most likely something internal.

Those keyboards usually have a tiny battery that keeps the operating system going. I'd check the manual.

You say it still happens with everything muted. The next time it happens unplug the line from the mixer output. If it stops then something is not muted and that could be your problem. If it doesn't stop with the mixer disconnected then you can eliminate the mics and acoustic guitars as the source of the feedback.
