i tried an 12at-7 in the PI position in my original RX and it made some pretty terrible hum/buzzing noises. not the increased headroom i was hoping to sniff out. Actually i tried 2 different at-7s which i had robbed out of my VTL preamp, both sovtec. THe PI that was stock didn't have lableing and the tube had different internal structure than the other ax-7 in the amp but all preamp tubes are suppose to be ax-7. any thoughts as to why it hates the at-7 so bad?

Many 12AT7's today draw way too much currrent ... way more than is expected out of a 12AT7 that is to spec.
Try a 5751 .... same gain as the AT7 with much less current and much smoother. More clean headroom too and you can use it in V1 as well as SRV used to do in his Fender amps.
