Hey everybody,
First time recording with the maz & I've been trying to lay down some lead tracks using a sm57 slightly off the cone etc.. and have had a bit of trouble getting a fat-ish sound with her despite my usual placement trials. Is there better/best placement for the blue? I've tried it both on and off axis or maybe it's cause I have the master dimed? The mics about 2 fingers off the grill.
pentode mode: vol-11, treble-8:30, mid-12, bass-12, rev-off, cut 10, master- cranked, bl-off, Strat hi - 61 SG-low inputs
I'm running the mic straight into a focusrite sapphire pro 40 - daw
Thanks for any help!

Have you tried triode mode yet? I know that would get some fatness going. Or try bumping the mids up just a bit.

Try backing the mic off 6~8 inches, or even a foot or more, then do the "axis" drill again to find "your" sweet spot. Maybe move off the edge of the speaker, and "45" the 57 toward the center.
High SPLs, + low-wattage AlNiCo speakers, can be tricky. Pretty loud around here when recording.

Do you have the amp on the floor?

I tend to like the master volume closer to noon, rather than cranked. Up past noon it seems to get hairier to me with out much more volume. Is your speaker well broke in?

Man, I was using the 8 at the studio yesterday. Got some un-real sounds for a guy I've recorded a lot before in the past. The diff in the grind from the preamp and the master (past noon) is really awesome.

I hear you Eric, it is fun to crank up the volume and lower the master or visa a versa. On my Maz Jr, I got more bottom end out of my amp with the Master cranked, I don't get that same result with Maz 8, I get more grind but not as much thump

It's so great to be able to access the power tube distortion.
