More work needed on this but, given the additional speakers and playing conditions auditioned, I am consistently preferring Eminence RWB, WGS Blackhawk HP and EVM-12L over Celestion G12M Greenback, Scumback M75-LHDC-HP (G12-65 style) and Celestion G12-65. The first three seem to balance out and complement - in a very musical way - the high mid emphasis of the amp which the three G12M-based speakers seem to reinforce and exaggerate, almost to the point of becoming "nasal". Still need to try Scumback M75 25W, but think it will exhibit behavior similar to the Celestion version.
Stay tuned...

I ordered a couple WGS speakers, the invader and the et-65. I put the invader in my Z 1x12 ext cab and plugged it into the M12. It sounded great to my ears. Nice mids and highs, and nice full bass but not boomy. It was actually pretty well balanced. I think I'll hook it up to the variac for a few hours to loosen it up real good. Although, it sounds good right out of the box.

Although, it sounds good right out of the box. Nice! Speakers are very much an individual thing and can easily make or break any amp for any player. I threw an older original Tone Tubby in the M12 combo cab today and INSTANTLY liked it much better than the Cele G12M, which had this high mid thing going on that I just could not dial out and did not care for. Put them in a 4x12 and run an old Marshall style circuit through them and they are heaven. Just can't seem to make i t work in this app though. So, now, I'm down to the TT and WGS BH HP as my two faves and the tones I'm getting with these are just blowing me away. The WGS is in a Forte 3D112, which is an excellent match for this amp as well. That said, the Z 1x12 combo cab is definitely the biggest and most open sounding I've ever heard! WOW! Also messed with various attenuators again today and kept coming back to to the naked amp as the best bet at all volume levels. Z really nailed this thing as the ultimate pedal platform! I am tickled pink that I took a chance on this amp!

I actually came back to the stock tubes as my fave, but with speakers being up to 50% of the equation or more, I just needed some tweaking in that area. And, really, everything but the stock Cele G12M has been pretty amazing.

And speakers will sound different in different cabs, it's a crazy thing chasing tone. I have a Tone Tubby H1E so I'll have to try that out. I'm pretty impressed with the Invader though. I think it's a good alternative to the G12M, especially for higher wattage amps. I've yet to try a single alnico with the M12, although I can't imagine the Gold not sounding good with it. I've yet to find an amp I like the blue in as a stand-alone speaker. I like the blue paired with other speakers, just not by itself.

It sounded pretty good this past weekend through a 2x12 Celestion Blue loaded cab this weekend! More clean headroom and louder!

With most amps, I like higher wattage alnicos better than lower wattage types because they seem to be warmer and smoother with OD. Of course, the TT hemp cone adds a whole other dimension to things. I ordered another BH HP to actually try in the M12 combo cab because I had a few minutes to compare it in the Forte cab against the TT in the M12 cab it in a big room standing back a ways and I liked the TT in the M12 cab better. But, standing up close to the amp, I liked the BH slightly better! Cabs mean everything too!

I would imagine thats the cab I intend to use it through once I get one. I recently ran my Maz 18 through my Z 212 w/Blues and really liked it. I had the combination sitting around for a couple of years and had not gotten around to trying it before then. Keith

Just spent a couple days with a WGS Blackhawk HP ALNICO in the M12 combo and it is, by far, the best match so far. Just blowing me away. Sounds better in the M12 1x12 combo cab than in the Forte 3D112 and, going back to back with the Tone Tubby, I prefer the BH.
It is probably the smoothest speak I've ever heard with OD tones but you can dial in as much high end as you need and the thing just stays sweet and smooth and open. And, I love the way it maintains that smoothness as the volume is lowered.
The M12 with this speak will see its first two gigs this week.
