Okay, I got to hear a Mini Z with the Maz 8 tranny next to unmodded Mini Z. Wow! First off, Patty could here the difference between them from the next room. Here is the scoop, the unmoded Mini sounds real cool. The moded Mini has a much wider range of tone, sounded much tighter, more bottom end and a little more bell like. The orginal sounded grainy in comparison. I was really surprised how good it sounded. When we get Michael's back from the shop I'll try and shoot a video. Here is the deal, its $125 mod for parts and labor, shipping is extra. Only the newer chassis Mini's can be done, the tranny won't fit in the small chassis frame. I vote yes, for doing this if you have the extra $$, you'l like it Todd

Here are my initial thoughts. The mini seems to have a bit less fuzz to it somehow. I guess now the cleaner sounds and the overdrive have a bit more definition to the notes. At high gain settings the mini now seems to have almost a little more natural tremolo to it as the sustain tails off. Does that even make sense?

What I am wondering is does this change retain that great dirt the Mini has but also allow for more cleans when a guitars volume is rolled back...(ala the Carmen Ghia)? Anyone?

I'm not sure it's exactly got more clean headroom. But I did not compare two side by side. I just remember what mine sounded like. I would say the note definition is a bit more present so in that sense it is more clean. But there is still lots of crunch on tap it's just not quite as fuzz sounding at the highest level. Todd help me out here. I'm messing this up.

Don was kind enough to set up a little test bed for Michael at the shop. He took a modded Mini Z chassis and set it on top of Michael's unmodded Mini and we could run them thru the same speaker (he has the 10" red fang).
Ben, I agree, there is less fuzziness to the overdrive and more articulation. The thing I liked the best was the tighter bottom end and there seemed to be less back ground noise so the notes sounded clearer.
Keep in mind, this upgrade is not like getting a different amp, the amp has all the wonderfulness that made it cool, the organic overdrive, the small amp cranked way up sounds, its just a little better sounding now. Its a modest improvement in an already cool sounding amp and for the money, worth it.
