I picked up a meter today ... been meaning to for a while. I want to use this in a test of a Brake Lite on the Route 66. I get a pretty good sound with the volume almost off when I'm just practicing and get a 83db rating at 1 meter. When I crank up the volume to about 2:00 the RT66 just wails and can be a little harsh sounding ... it comes in at a loud:
2x12 @ 4-ohm = 123db 2x12 @ 16-ohm = 120db 1x12 @ 8-ohm = 117db
I get the Brake Lite in Monday ... so next week I'll play with it. Also interested in what my other two amps do ... the difference running my EVM12L cabs ... how much the VVR on the Richter Tweed is able to dial out. It dials all the way down to about 80db with the 30w tweed cranked I bet. In fact, my Brown Note D'Lite is about the same with the MV. Will be checking all this week.
The main thing is taming the RT66 a bit when cranked and taking a bit of the harsh edge off. Hope the Brake Lite works ... if not I might try the VVR ... but I'm hopeful with the Brake Lite.
Edit: Checked my other two amps ... Both the Brown Note & the Richter Supra-Luxe checked in at about 82db the way I practice at home ... cranked up on the settings I play live they are about 103db. So the RT66 is significantly louder. The other amps were smoother though cranked up ... not as harsh. Of course an extra 20db might sound harsh. The Brake Lite should be an interesting experiment.

Is that unweighted, "C" weighted, or "A" weighted?

Is that unweighted, "C" weighted, or "A" weighted? It's a C ... but it's the max. Haven't figured out how to get a weighted on this unit ... I can pick "slow" rather than fast ... will probably try to use those numbers in the tests I'm doing. But it was easier to set it on "max" while playing. For comparison purposes ... that's about how it felt. I really do need to set up the test where I can record the average along with the max though.

yeah...you definitely don't want a peak instantaneous measurement. That might be useful for some things but not for determining "average" SPL for comparison purposes.

Yeah from 0 to click 4 there was only about 5-8 db differnce no matter what I did ... clearly it was getting quieter ... so it did not really tell me much when I finally got the Brake Lite. It would be nice it it actually could show averages rather than just display slow moving averages ... I could not really do anything with that info. Oh well.

Hi doveman, I know that this is not the intent of this thread, but your comment about the amp being harsh when cranked seems strange. When I think Route 66, I think smooth overdrive. Where were your tone controls set? Was the treble really high and the bass really low? What speakers were you using? What kind of room were you in (concrete walls would make it sound harsh)? Not trying to attack - just trying to help you have a better experience. Here is kind of a "rubric" of the Route 66 tone - did yours sound like this?

But the front end needs to be bumped a little with a pedal or it's a bit cold ... using a Timmy. Sounds pretty good low ... as I turn it up it's not as "chewy" as those clips but close. Once I get the volume over midway it starts to feel better but it's too loud. Not real satisfied with the Brake Lite either. Speakers Scumback M75 and/or Celestion G-1265 ... should be perfect. Tried my EVM12L but that's even louder ... deadly. Big carpeted room above my garage ... all other amps sound good here. Every control setting. speaker set up, BL setup ... spent all day. Ears were ringing at the end of the day ... LOL. It's almost like it's just biased too cold ... but I can't adjust that unless I install the 1 ohm resistors or become comfortable with the shunt bias method.

I wonder too if the bias is off... This just sounds a bit odd.
I wish you lived close to me - I'd bias it for you. Too far of a drive to Paintsville, KY I would imagine.
