Ok, so my new Dr Z Mini arrived yesterday, but this amp is INCREDIBLY bright. Is this normal? I play a 61 Thin Skin Strat and a Squier Classic Vibe Tele, and I had to roll the tone almost off on both to get a useable tone. This thing sounds GREAT once I found the sweet spot, but I just didn't know if brightness is a trait of Dr Z in general. What do you guys think? Anyways, here are some pics!

This is not the first time someone has said this. I wonder if this is the Vox type chimey thing you are hearing. Can someone with more experiance help our new Bro? For me my Dr. Z 210 did not sound too good at first, but I had never moved the tone on my LP in the past and I have it about mid way now. Eventually the speakers themselves started to sound better on the 210 or I guess you would say more broken in. But I still have the tone at about halfway on the guitar with the Mini. With the 112 closed back it is not as pronounced but I still have adjusted the tone controls on the LP to get things to sound the way I like. All is good with me now. Again, any help for 1985 from someone who owns a tele for example?

With the tone knob adjusted down, the tone is out of this world. I've heard some people say that these sound much better when cranked, but so far at lower volumes, I'm not overly happy.

With an amp without a tone control, you need to rely on the guitar's tone controls to roll off excess highs. Believe it or not, you may be glad that extra brightness is there is some situations. Still, some things you can do to tame it further would be to use a dark 12AX7 in it. JJ's tend to be on the dark side to my ears.
I always liked using a 12AU7 in V1 in my Mini Z. Changes it up a bit in that you lose volume overall, but you get a little better cleans from it.
And yes, they sound pretty darn good when they are cranked. It's sort of designed to be set with the volume way up - then use you guitar volume and tone controls to dial it in.
Give it a little time and get used to using the guitar to control the amp. You may really warm up to it!
Best, Eddie

Thanks guys,
Well, just for giggles I played my Fender Blues Deluxe through my Two Rock cab and I was amazed at what I heard....not in a good way. The BDRI through the Two Rock cab was muffled, overly bassy, and just plain awful! The same with the Two Rock...it just sounded muffled.
So, maybe it is the speaker

Played around some more on the Mini last night...I really like this little guy! Even though I have to tame the brightness with the tone knob considerably, it sounds so cool. I bet it cuts through a mix like budda'

Well, I'm sending the MiniZ back today in exchange for a Carmen Ghia. It's a fun little amp, but the brightness is only controllable from about 2-3 maybe 4 on the tone knob. I use my tone knobs with every amp, but the added tone control on the Carmen Ghia will help give me more real estate to play with. Plus, after testing it out, I think 5 watts is borderline what I need. 18 watts will be more than enough for any situation for me.

I have the older orginial Mini. We played at the county fair the other night and I didn't know how far I was going to have to walk... so I took my Mini and mic'd it. After the first two songs, our singer turns and says, "your rig sounds sick tonight". So I sold my Mojave 2x12 and working on selling my Goodsell S17.
Like previously stated... It cuts like budda! Everything sounds different when you add a drummer, bass, and vocals I guess...
