I recently played a s/h custom shop Esquire and really loved the tone. I'm seriously thinking of swapping my Trussart Steelcaster for it. I know there's plenty of serious Tele enthusiasts on this site but does anyone own an Esquire? I'd like an original but they are serious £££££££. My only concern is that I might regret only having one PU

I'm not tele extroardinaire, but I played the Jeff Back tele that only has one no caster pickup in it and couldn't imagine wanting anything more, and I'm usually a two pickup kind of guy.

You could sell that Steelcaster to me...if I had the $$ - Skydog, The steelcaster is a lovely axe with a beautiful slim neck. Since I got the Firebird I hardly play anything else. My wife is also asking why I've got all these guitars so I'll have to shed some of them. I could get by with just the Firebird and a Tele.

I stay on the bridge pup of a Tele 95% of the time and could get along with an E no problem, just roll back the tone knob for those neck tones.

I am tempted to make my next partscaster an Esquire...some people say that the lack of a neck pickup allows more harmonics to ring through.

Well that should be true if you do the traditional Esquire wiring where the full down position on the pickup switch takes out the tone control, adding a touch more treble. What I've always wanted to do is get a 4 way switch and make it set 1st pos.: esquire bridge, 2nd: tele bridge (with tone pot), 3rd: bridge and neck, 4th: neck.

I could do an Esquire if I didn't need that jazz standards tone. That just doesn't sound right on a toned down bridge pickup. Just about every other style I can think of would be fine with an Esquire. IMO the tone cap in Teles suits the bridge pickup much more than the neck pickup. I think about 1/2 that value is better for the neck pickup.

Billy my road dawg #1 Tele has the neck pup wired straight on, the tone knob only works on the bridge, it makes for a very nice balanced Tele and adds clarity to the neck pup. For your Jazz it may not work, and if one sets their amp bright it may not work, but it is a very gigabvle set up for me as I like the tone rolled off on the bridge and the neck needs to be full on.

I've got a telecaster and the neck pickup doesn't even work....not that I use it anyway. Maybe I should just get an Esquire pickguard....I've been wanting an Esquire for awhile.

Billy, no Esquire amongst you stash of beauties? The one I want is still in the shop, 5 weeks, surely it's time to make an offer. I played a NiK Huber Junior last year that's only got one P90 and it was fabulous. Can't think why I'm worried about one single coil. Can't find one of Nik's Juinors anywhere, they just get snapped up.

When it comes to using a one pickup guitar I would have to default to a neck pickup position. I do have a reissue Les Paul Jr but my idea when I bought it was to have someone put a neck pickup on it to make it a pseudo-Special. If I was doing a straightup blues band I could use an Esquire but I'm not so there it is, no application for one.

since i do like the look of Esquires but do need a bit of front pickup sweetening in the middle position, i've done the "Stealth Tele" thing where i put an Esquire 'guard and having the front pickup below the 'guard. i didn't do anything elaborate like thinning my 'guard. i just used a high(er) output Strat pickup in there.

I've seen Tele bridge plates that don't have a cutout for a bridge pickup, for "backwards" Esquires.

The Jr has the same scale length as the Gibson, 22 frets but I'm not sure of much else. Nik Huber's own P90 delivers bigstyle. Think the body is korina. He has had a lot of guidance from PRS himself. He also does a fabulous LP style guitar.

I wish makers would just give up that 24-3/4" scale! Except for that dead string jazz tone everything sounds better to me with a 25-1/2" scale. And as far as that goes, the big wood jazz guitars are always 25-1/2". 24-3/4" guitars just don't sound or feel right to me anymore. Sorry to rant!

A buddy of mine ask me to build him an Esquire. So I searched and searched for an Esquire body and found a Japanese Fender body. We had the body routed for a neck humbucker. He had a pickguard that he carefully sanded to THIN the pickguard in the area where a neck pickup would go. We placed a loud but clean DiMarzio pickup hidden under the the pickguard. So when you look at the guitar it looks like an Esquire but it has a hidden neck pickup. It sounds great and he gigs with it all the time!

I saw a Custom Shop 'Stealth' Esquire that had three PU's but only the bridge showing, the other two buried behind the pick guard. Is that getting away from the simplistic appeal of the original concept? Matter of opinion I suppose. I make furniture in my spare time, perhaps making an Esquire type would be a good project???

Out of the 3 tele style guitars I've owned, I like the Esquire I built from parts the best. It really has the most balanced sound out of all of my guitars. I don't miss a neck pickup at all in this. I do eventually want to get a 60's style tele for the sound you get with both pickups on. Here's mine, I just need to get a pickgaurd for it. It's a solid rosewood neck and a cheap body, my guess is it's basswood, but not sure. With a Stephens Design PUP in it, that I could not be happier with.

I always wanted a Tele type guitar with a Ric horseshoe pickup at the neck position. Probably can't be done but those pickups are about the best sounding pickups in the world!

The Custom Shop Seymour Duncan Esquire is a great sounding guitar and surprisingly versatile. I've only played it once, but I remember going away impressed and sorry for the price tag at the same time!
