Since learning the RX is no longer gonna be offered . I was thinking I should grab one up??? This and the Ray were my amp choices and as you who know me ..... Know it was all Ray. The Ray can do soooo soooooo much it can be so spanky clean so voxish with note definition with nice break up to full Roar with help from a pedal. Anyone fortunate enough to own both? Can anyone please give me some 411 on the ups and downs and compared to my beloved Stangray

Steve (Benttop) might be able to provide more info. I think I recall a benttop side by side comparison with the Ray but I could be mistaken. We both owned a RX ES at one time. I was craving a big bottle fix and traded off the RX ES for a 6545. I was happy with the RX and liked the ef86 boost function. The boost switch on the amp I owned was on the panel instead of a foot switch. From what I recall there are some similarities with the two amps but they are not the same amp! The RX ES had more gain on tap. In my opinion the Ray's midrange was more refined and had a richer bottom end response. Don't get me wrong the RX ES has plenty of bottom end and can easily hang with a cranked marshall. But, I was switching speakers and amps so much back then I really didn't have enough gig time to know it as well as I do the Ray. I do know that I liked it, alot! I could not resist the lure of a 6545 and traded it off. For me it's hard to compare any amp to the Ray. There are different amps for different styles but the Ray is special to me. I wish it ran 6l6's but then it would not be a ray. I'm fairly confident the Ray and RX ES have different output trannys. There's sompin special about that tranny. Don't quote me on this but I think the ray, remedy and jaz 40/20 run the same output tranny.

I came feally close to buying one and I got my Ray as everyone knows. I just cant get the Tone of the 20 Watt Marshall. Cranked it was tonal bliss . Its on the wishlist. But I dont want it to sound like the Ray if you know what I mean. It would be nice to have the Ray Breakup a little Faster. Thats what Im wanting to acheive. For now I leave the timmy on or the BB and stack when need big sustain and more Gain:)) ill ask steve he will steer me straight

have you tried a Maz GT? Same trannys as the Ray and has a fast response. Some compare it to a marshall'ish sound. I really can't compare the GT to any other amp I've played. Both Steve and Phil have superbly described and recorded the GT.

I had both at the same time for a little bit. Nothing beat the beauty of the Ray's tone. RX was definitely in the same family. Not quite as beautiful in the clean, chimey arena. But I certainly liked the RX much better for the ruder stuff. Definitely felt that the RX was much more percussive. Also had an RX JR combo. Felt that the JR and the ES sounded about the same. JR just gave up the goods a little sooner.
I often wish I hadn't sold the Ray. The RX was better for the bluesy, rock stuff I was doing.
Either way, you can't go wrong. Me personally, if I had to do it again I would probably have kept the Ray and tried different pedals to get the OD tones. I was using a BB with the Ray, and though it sounded decent, I think there are some newer pedals and other pedals which I hadn't tried which may have pushed the Ray right into the same tonal area as the RX.
And I would have still had the gorgeous cleans of the Ray.
Actually, if I could afford it, I would have both a Ray and an RX, like I did for a short bit. But, a guy can't have everything.

I would never part with my Ray for the Rx ;D that would be crazy . I just dont want to have two amps that are the tonewise very similar. I know the Rx does brakup faster. I would probably lean toward the Jr 45 watts is alot. I have been looking into the Rati GT too. My main thoughts are how close in tone are the two amps. I wont be parting with the Ray. Its very dear to me. It does alot of tone in a small package for sure!!!!
