10" lover - that should be my porn name, lol - I wish. Anyway, I love my Maz Jr 2x10 combo and my Z28 head with 2x10 extension. I loved my '68 Super Reverb before I realized that it was just too loud for my gigs. I guess what I am saying is that I have always been drawn to 10" speakers but I think that the Studio Maz 8 combo sounds like a cool idea. Short of trying out one of these little guys is there any way to talk me in to thinking I would like a 12" speaker in an amp?

Well, I have really never used anything but 12" speakers. There are tons of options now for 12" speakers, such as lower sensitivity ratings so they aren't as loud. But honestly, that's something you really won't know for yourself until you use it in a gig situation.

That's kind of what I was afraid of. The only experience I have with 12" speakers was with an early Fender Blues Deluxe (tweed one before they began the Hot Rod ones) and it was ok, but I don't remember much about it, really - I also have a Fender Custom Shop Tone Master head and 2x12 cabinet. It's a closed back cab, which has more bass and boom than my combos and the amp is 100 watts, which is ridiculous (I can't believe we used to play gigs with my brother and I each using one of those amps!).
So I guess in my mind I hear 12" speakers and think of big bassy boomy loud sounds just because of my past experience.

That's not so much a problem with open backs. Now it can get that if eq and speaker choice aren't watched. But I have a 1x12 Maz 18 combo with an eminence red fang and I have no trouble taming the bass. The maz has a great eq.
I also have an RX Jr which has lots of bass on tap. I used it with a z-best 2x12 cab which is closed back and I had to really dial back the bass or it was way overbearing and rumbly. That same amp with the Doc's open back 2x12 was way better. I had more usuable range on the bass knob with the open back, same speakers.

Also, I know some Z folks start with bass knob off. Set the mids and highs where they want them. Then roll in the bass just enough to fatten it up but still allow it to cut through the mix
