ok, i need your help & experience. i need to choose a head for playing through my blue 1x12 z cab for small clubs only. here is my story. -i love the stangray through a blue or blue/gold cabs, but only for large outside gigs. - i love the carmen ghia through a blue but it is too loud for small clubs i play. i love the only el84's & simple tone stack of these amps. i can not use an z-attenuater, i tried but find they just suck the tone. - i used to have an rx jr & liked it for it's master vol but thought it was a little thin & couldn't dial in tone knobs well, but loved the ef86 tube sound , also found the monza & z28 way too mid-rangey for me. ** wondering if the maz 18 will be able to be pushed a little into that sweet spot with a blue & still be lower in vol than the ghia. - i have no dealers by me & am getting so tired of buying & selling z heads to find the right one. **any input is much appreciated.

wow you thought the rx jr. was thin? i've got a Jr. with a blue mixed with a g12h and it's super thick (i suppose the g12h thrown into the mix would certainly be a big factor in that). Have you tried an air brake (or lite?) could be a cheaper solution. also did you try the boost mixed with the mv on the rx jr? i've found it really helps fatten up the tone of the jr at lower volumes. there's also ALOT of low end available with the eqing. I probably didn't help much but there are always other things to consider as well, right?

go for the rx jr. lol. sorry i have a bias. ...your fault, you posted in the jr. forum. JK. but yeah I think the rxjr will get you where you wanna be. i've never had a problem with it sounding "thin" maybe slightly more trebly on the low input, btu never thin. I prefer them to the maz jr.s.

An Rx Jr shouldn't sound thin IMHO. Tube issue maybe? My Rx Jr sounds great even with no pedals at all, just guitar>cable>amp. If an amp doesn't sound great to start with then that is an issue in itself. The tone should be there before adding pedals.
I have both and they are both great sounding amps although I'm not sure about how the Rx would sound with a single blue. I'm sure it would sound great but I know Doc's speaker of choice for the 1x12 Rx Jr is the Celestion Greenback.
One thing about Z's is that you really have to experiment with the tone controls. Some of Doc's tone stack designs are very interactive with each other. I really don't think you could go wrong with either amp. The Maz maybe a tad bit more versatile, but the Rx Jr has a certain character all its own.

Here's a couple of recent clips of my RXJR, playing with my blues band - guitar straight in (hi input) with the OD on. Treble at noon, bass around 10:30, mid around 2 o'clock. Vol in back around 2:30 with the front vol around 9 o'clock (usually set vol depending on the size of the club, but the back vol is always higher). Speaker: 112 Greenback.
Not a thin sounding amp to my ears.
With tone and oneness, Mike

I would have a hard time choosing between the 2 amps.
