Good news and Bad news - the JAZ 20/40 I ordered sight unseen last week from GC came in this afternoon. Good news - great looking amp - a Blond 2x10 (I didn't know color or configuration before it arrived). Here it is with its little friend Bad news - one of the reverb springs is broken off. Gotta take it over to the GC store nearest me to get it fixed. Probably be a couple weeks before I get it back. I could replace the unit in about 10 seconds but Dr. Z. isn't one of their vendors so I have to wait. Sucks!

It was GC on their website with "picture to follow" and literally no description of the amp (didn't say whether it was head or combo, or speaker configuration (If it was a combo), it didn't list color). But hey, for $999 I figured it was worth it no matter what configuration it was.

$999 ;D
Makes you wonder from whom GC acquired it.

$999 ;D Makes you wonder from whom GC acquired it. Looks brand new so I'm guessing it did not see any gigging. Probably a basement amp that was too loud for the wife ;D

Probably a basement amp that was too loud for the wife ;D Aren't they all..? Congrats on snagging the JAZ--I know they're a really under-appreciated versatile amp. A new amp for the new year! Cheers!

Is there a post somewhere that Mike says this is what he uses? Might be worth it just to get one anyway if he likes the sound better!

Think it's in one of the MAZ sections, maybe the 8.

I found the thread - thanks Mike. Just ordered one to hear the difference (when mine comes back). I didn't realize how inexpensive they were - I would have just bought one if I had known rather than taking it back to GC.

Sorry I was late on the suggestion. Just remembered that thread today. Let us know how you like it. I will be ordering one as well.

I'm really interested in how the new reverb tank sounds. I love the way mine sounds but I wish the adjustment wasn't so sensitive. I can't get mine over 9:00 before it get too "springy". I even toned it down a little with a 5751 driver tube. I just set it at the sweet spot and leave it there so it isn't a big deal. Let us know what you think.

Yeah, let us know what you think of the different pan. Once you get your head wrapped around it all. I've tempted to just order one. But I really like it as it is. I'm not a real heavy reverb guy though. Little for a subtle effect for me. Usually just barley on. A little less decay might be cool..... then maybe I could use a touch stronger effect. I should just look into it better. Not even sure which (long, med, short) type tank the JAZ has. or what kind the new one is. Curious on your thoughts on the amp as well once you get some time on it. I tend to think of it as a Blackface "type" amp, but pushing the design to a point where it really is it's own thing. No ice pick highs, though very crisp and brite. No flubby "exploding, farting" bottom end but big and taunt. It gives up in a very nice musical way. Sorta scooped mids like a BF but thick sounding all around. Though it sounds real good with all my humbuger guitars, it really is something else with a 335. I also like it with the mids dimed, the bass dimed and the treble just about off. V 1:30 M1:30 BL 2. Then a Tubescreamer set with the gain just about off and the level around 1:00 and a LP. Real greasy, at least with a G12H30. As close to Gibbons as I'll ever get with these fingers. Cleans up so much just by picking, and "clean" as could be with a little GV roll off. Probally should have said all that in the setting thread But enjoy the amp when all is said and done. I know I sure like it.

Continuing saga - I went to GC to see where they stood on fixing the reverb on my JAZ. Seems that they hadn't even sent it out of the store - its been sitting in the back waiting for their repair guy who seems to only come every four weeks or so. I told them this was unacceptable - I told them that if they would give me a refund of $27 dollars (the cost of the new reverb tank from Antique Electronics) that I would not darken their doorstep again! They couldn't give me the money quick enough. I took it home and installed it in about 5 minutes. It worked all the way up to 12:00 on the reverb dial - after that I got feedback that was coming and going. Now what? Well, I was all ready to send a note to the great people at Dr. Z. (you know who you are Don and Brent ) when I decided to put the reverb tank back into the bag. (I had it sitting on top of the bag since I wasn't sure it was gonna work and didn't want to have to remove it again!) I tried it one last time and - VOILA!! It worked perfectly. Not sure why it did that but it did! The tone of the JAZ is simply amazing!! It may be my favorite Z sound (at the moment ) It sounds like a band of angels singing (well, maybe not quite that good - but almost!) Todd, Mark, and Steve - you're gonna have to get back over to hear this baby sing! Going to take it down into the man cave to try it with the LP and the 335. I'll let you know when I come up for air how I like it! But like the Beatles said "I gotta feeling"

Great news on the 'verb, Mike. The JAZ is a honey, isn't it?
I haven't used mine in a while, but I plan to get it back in the rotation this week. I'm eager to try the Boss BC-2 with its AC-30 tones plugged into a JAZ set toward blackface clean. Seems like that could be a killer set up for my oldies/classic rock ensemble.

Sounds like a sweet deal, Mike! Ya know, I've always had this suspicion that the JAZ was one of the nicest clean/almost-clean amps around, especially with reverb and all that. (Sort of like an "American-toned" cousin of the StangRay for amazing cleans?) It'd probably put my '65 DR to shame.. and that one ain't no slouch, either.
