I find the D'Addarios last quite long when I use Fast Fret after I play. When I'm playing live, I use it after every set.

Well, after some great info from a fellow Z-forum member, Rick Fass (dei305), I recently started using Curt Mangan strings (www.curtmangan.com). I'm not really all that peticular about string brands, but the Mangans are cool because they have so many options & custom gauges. I really prefer to use 9.5-44's on Fender-scaled guitars, and Mangan happens to be one of the few companies that offers that gauge, and in different types (nickel, stainless, etc.) Other than that, I've always been just fine with the "standard" types like Balls or D'add's.... J I just found out about Mangan's a couple of weeks ago and am in the process of switching over to them also (ordered a few sets by mail). I'm glad to see that they are good...

I used Ernie Ball for about 20 years. I tried lots of others and always went back to EB. Recently I tried a set of the Snake Oil on my Hamer Artist and have become a true believer. The Snake Oils sound and feel great, much better than the EB, and stay that way for a very long time. I am also VERY picky about my picks. It's Fender extra heavy or nothing.

I played a v-neck strat yeserday in honey blonde that was set up with 9s. I couldn't stand it. I commented to the salesman that it played like a toy! (like a toy guitar, not like a toy that was cool). Loved the guitar, hated the strings! Something about those strings just felt dumb. I didn't like them at all. I dug that v-neck, though. I would love to wear out that maple neck for twenty years or so. Just my 2 cents' worth.

I use the 10's - their 25 set bulk box is a great value if you change strings often. Karma for that tip kruzty...Id never looked for a bulk pack...this will save me some money since I go thru at least 2 sets per week.

I use a custom set of .12's on all of my guitars. I like the resistance. They stay in tune like crazy and they are louder acoustically. 12, 15, 20 plain 34, 46, 56 wound D'Addario
Paisley sounded pretty great on the Today Show

The kid @ GC told me that they can get custom sets in a 10 pack for $30. I should get off my lazy butt and do it.

But i think I'll stick with the Snake Oils as long as I've got a set in my case. I'm with you 100%. Thats why I ordered up 6 sets.

I just slapped on a set of Ernie Ball Not Even Slinkeys for a guitar that I tune a half step down, and then into drop D (really drop C#), and I have to say, for a guy who likes .011s, this set is monsterous. They go .012-.016-.024-.032-.044-.056. The G string is a killer. My usual G is .018.
It was really funny when I had the other guitarist in my band feel the strings. He tunes the same way with .010s I think. Even .011s tuned down felt weak to me!

When it comes to strings, I am the complete opposite from guitars, effects and amps. I have found to prefer the big boys to smaller "hand made" strings. I hate to say it, but I prefer Gibson Brite Wires for their .011-.050 set. They seem to be the only folks who put .038's and .028's and still use a .050 for the low "E". Everybody else uses the skinnier .036 and .026 which feel small when coming off of a .050 low "E". Have tried DR's, cause you can get custom gauges, but their intonation can be inconsistent from set to set. It seems to me, and I could be totally wrong on this, that the bigger the company, the more consistent the intonation. These hand wound guys seem to be way off from time to time on intonation, totally annoying when you play up and down the neck a lot. Nothing more frustrating than having 4 sets be spot on and then have one set be way off!!

One of the big string companies, GHS or Ernie Ball, recently started making sets in the guages I want. They're called Misfits and have some goofy halloween looking picture on the front and an endorsement on the back by some guy talking some stupid trash. But, the guages are what I want; .011, .013, .017, .030, ,042, .052. Everybody makes a .010 to .052 but this is the first for .011 thru .052. I bought them at Guitar Center.

I havent bought strings in years. I live next to GHS and have many friends who work there and dont play I always liked boomers untill i tried''GHS pure nickel roundwound burnished strings. Very nice feel. I recomend them to all of ya. DAdarro is the number one manufactor of strings. GHS is number 2. Both companys repackage strings under private labels. There is a good chance snake oil is made by one of the above.

i live next 2 GHS. So I'm kinda partial to them . their burnished nickle strings are really great. I can tell you one thing. Strings have a shelf-life. When I get em from the factory, and they are hours old, wow! they sound so much better than if I buy them at a store. It really is a noticable difference. Around here, boomers are the hot comodity, but my buddy who works there got me started on the burnished nickel ones and I really love em. He is in charege of "artist relations" so he wines and dines the stars. He was very close with SRV, and Jeff Beck, and many others. Boy does he have some stories!!! Smokin Joe Kubeck calls him alot and is useing a Maz Sr. To quote Rod Stuart..."some guys have all the luck" chip

I've used the D'ad 10-52's since around 1995 but i've been wanting an 11 set to try out in that gauge . It may be time for a change . Do you know what a 10 pack costs ??

Getting them from the factory helps, but they have probably been there for a little longer than you might expect. I use to work for Black Diamond Strings when they were in Fort Worth. We would get tubes of bulk raw strings from the manufacturer. We'd then send those to the Light House for the Blind. They would package the strings and send them back to us at the warehouse. All this takes a little while. All in all the strings are still fresher than they might be at the guitar store. DougG

Nitehawk55: I think at Guitar Center they are $30 for a pack of 10. I need to check it out for myself and buy a box. That is damn cheap. I put on a set last week, played a gig, played 30 minutes each day on them and last night played another 4 hour gig. Didn't break any. I've put on strings before that I've had laying around the house for 10 or 15 years. You know what, they were fine. I guess I wouldn't know a fresh string if it jumped up and bit me on the butt!

I think if strings a stored in dry conditions they are OK for quite a while but sure wouldn't last long here right now with the heat and humidity we get off the great lakes !!...yikes !! Can you let me know if they are $30 for a 10 pack and if it's possable I can't find any up here could I send you the $$ inc. shipping to friends I have in Dryden Michigan that the wife and I visit ??

just have your friends call any Guitar Center. Ask the GC people if they will order the Dean Markley Skullbuster (stupid name) strings in a 10 pack, .011 thru .052.

nitehawk: No matter who buys them you'll have to order them in from GC. So I just can't go in and pick them up. Everybody has free long distance from a cell phone or otherwise so just have your friends google them and give one of the stores a call. I'm sure they'd ship right to your friends house. I don't think GC has an online store but they might. I looked and Musician's Friend carries them but no mention of boxes of 10 or pricing but one time at GC they said they could order in GHS but in custom guage sets for $30 a box of 10 sets.

D'addario just came out with a new Medium top/Heavy bottom with a plain G string. 11-52. Hallelujah!! Can't wait to get fresh sets. I tried a set of strings with the same gauges by piecing together singles. Love it!! Just the right amount of give and tone. Nothing like big piano wires on the three low wound strings!! Just huge and feels great.

Strings are absolutely a subjective topic. The best we can do here is name our favorite strings! Maybe give another guy this "karma" for agreeing with us...what did Archie Bunker say? Whoopty Doo??
