I know this amp is meant to be Voxish and twangy cleans but my Ray sounds more marshallish to my ears. Im using an old Black Long Plate RCA in the 12AX spot and an old Blackplate USA made rectifier and the Gold mostly Pfor final tone delivery. I play everything from bkues rock to country with this badboy! This amp really delivers the tone and man does it cut throug the mix. Does anyone else use their ray For primarily Rock tones?? Jamie

Hells yeah I use mine for rock.. not sure it's Marshalllish but I love the bottom end and the cut. I've got a NOS 12At7 in the PI and a copper cap in the recto. I kick it mostly with a Cusack Screamer and run it through one (G12h) or two (G12H and black shadow) Mesa Thiele 1x12 cabs, their like mini Z best cabs. I can get a great classic rock sound when I run the amp just to the point of breakup and hit it with the Screamer, guitar vol down for verses and up for choruses and solos. If I run the amp to low and clean and hit it with the Screamer it sounds very heavy metelish so I keep a break lite around if I need to be quieter.

Just picked up a Ray put in new TAD EL84's has a NOS mis-labled 5v4 and I have been playing around with some NOS in the PI... like the 12at7 been trying it thru a 1x10,2x10,1x12 all loaded with Golds has some fantastic cleans with the tele strat ...found if I turn the cut almost all the way down I get some nice tones with the Tone set to noon with my ES335 but having said that I won't know how it will sound with the band I did try the Tele with the band at a gig over the weekend and it cut thru very nice seemed a little thin but I still have to get used to the amp ...I am going to try some different rec tubes 5v4 and 5r4 also a 5u4 in there to see if it can tame some of the fizz with pedals along with a couple NOS EF86's I have around this amp is a total different animal than the Z28 I had for sure

My ray screams i hit the front pretty hard. Usually a BB stacked.with a Timmy and.my Barber DD and my new found love the Wampler Pinnacle . It really cooks. Did the Copper cap clean the Ray up or did it just tighten everything down low??? I have heard this mod with tje SRZ but not the Ray. Keep em coming The Ray Rules!!!

Oh yeah Jamie, you know I enjoy playing rock music with the ray. And it rocks. Dario mini watt, lps 12ax7 (both stock with the amp), TAD el84s and mislabeled rectifier tube. I know youre a speaker tweaker and a gold fan. I've minimal gold experience and have found ceramics provide a good punch but suspect a well broken gold can provide great punch with the ray's big bottom potential. (rp - the ray can sound thin but I find that putting the cut around 9:00 and tone around noon or more and it's pretty beefy with single coils). Even though the ray can be voxish I'm happy with the Marshall type tones from a BB and Box of Rock. The BOR adds a huge bottom end thunk! And not to gloat but I've got that GT secret weapon channel in my ray. then it does sound like a marshall running el84s on steroids. Btw: recently picked up a line 6 M13 and am surprisingly happy with the unit's abilities - even the ODs and Distortion effects.

I forgot you had thle GT Ray:)) sweet! I usually run my ray with both. But when just the 1x12 alone its loaded with a GH30 or a G12-65 yes the ceramics pack punch. But the alnico has natural breakup thats awesome. One of my golds has been doped and has the pre - rola treatment from Weber . Its huge on the bottom. I m very happy with the tones im getting using the Ray . It just sounds very Marshall like to me and I couldnt be happier . Even though im gettying .a Remedy.

Hey randalp3000. Drew is one of the fortunate ones to.have an amp.that never was??? And should be:)) its a Stangray ch1 and a second ch 2 the Rati GT!!! Yes thats right what you just read. I had the opportunity to.play the MonzaRay at ZFest 10' I offered to buy on the spot and asked the goode DR Z to please put in production. We could start a whole thread with this and I have . It would be nice to offer more features like 2 ch amps. I think they could make on an order basis only if cost is the main issues?? What do.you think...... Im gonna be a proud owner of a real Z Marshall amp by the way!!!!! Jamie

I have a 6545 and have thought of rewiring the 45 side into a stangray with a tone and cut. The EF86 is set up quite differently in those 2 amps also so that would have to be changed as well as the tone stack. I really like the idea of a two channel amp as well, thanks for the info and keep us posted. rp

Did the Copper cap clean the Ray up or did it just tighten everything down low??? I have heard this mod with tje SRZ but not the Ray. Keep em coming The Ray Rules!!! I really didn't notice much difference with the copper cap. They are a little more than just a SS recto. The have some resistors in them as well so your'e supposed to get the same voltage drop as the 5ar4. I read recently on here somewhere that the copper cap might actually have more voltage drop than the tube recto, not sure if it's true or not. I wish I could use a full SS recto in the ray but have been advised not to because they run too close to class A and the voltage goes up too much. Also the copper cap's get really hot, almost as hot as a tube. hope this helps rp
