I wonder how many Carmen Ghia owners are going to see that switch and ask when they can get their upgrade. And let the speculation about jewel glass color versus mojo begin.

I wonder if Doc will send out more than one jewel color on the first run.. That would really get things stirred up!

About Stand-By switches. Much debate has gone on lately on other high level tube amp forums stating there is no true need for a Stand-By switch on a guitar amp.
The idea of Cathode Stripping has been proven wrong on guitar amp applications. The Stand-By switch is no more then a MUTE switch on the front of your amp.
It is basicly a hold over from early high powered guitar amps.

Wait! That doesn't clarify anything for dummies like me! If it's just a mute switch, then in standby mode there is still power going to the speakers? I thought it was Ok to unplug and change speaker cabs in standby mode! Ahhh! Help me be clarified here!!!

^^^
I believe it mutes the power tubes and therefore the speakers? When I'm not playing, I always flick to Stand By (on my Z28) to lengthen the life of my power tubes, and change speakers too if I need to.
Is this wrong Doc?

Good question. I always flick the standby when I take a break or when I switch guitars, but I turn the power off when I change speaker cabs. I've often wondered about this, is it OK to change speakers on standby or not?

Standby removes the B+ voltage from the power tubes. It is safe to change speakers with the amp on standby.
Even if you did not remove the B+, if the switch only muted the signal, you would still be fairly safe in swapping speakers simply because to destroy the transformer you need to have some signal currents. With no guitar signal, a momentary open circuit would probably be safe. Fortunately we have a standby that mutes the sound by removing the B+ and making it utterly safe to swap speakers. You Ghia guys shut it off though...

OK I didn't mean to get anyones panties in a bunch, if my post did. I understand that older believes about Stand-By are cast in stone and hard to change, but I will try and embellish on my earlier statement.
All of your points about SB usage are correct. But let me define them: When you engage SB to the off position you De-Energize the Output Transformer, that is you remove High Voltage from it's Primary. By doing so you can now SAFELY remove the load (i.e. Speaker ) from the amp. You remove the High Voltage from all the tubes Plates, which though it would be very hard to measure would put slightly less ware on the tubes maybe making them last SLIGHTLY longer.
You can now remove your guitar jack as the SB acts like a MUTE switch to eliminate any pop.
You can now leave your amp Powered UP , for say a break without fear of any noise being emitted, and the amp will now instantly work once the SB is in the ON position.
Is SB a nice feature YES, is it needed in a low powered tube rectified guitar amp NO.
