Hey guys, I have posted this in the Ask the Experts section also. I have a Mazerati (I believe version 2) and I can't bear to play my telecasters through this amp. They all (3 of them) seem to exhibit an overbearing quantity and quality of treble especially when overdriven through this amp. I have tried four different speakers and numerous tube swaps trying to get it tamed. I have read posts in the Mazerati section about how thick and warm these amps are, but that has not been my experience in any shape form or fashion. I really don't want some ultra warm or dark amp, I love a bright snappy telecaster and a chimey springy strat, but this thing is killing me. Please help! I am currently running a WGS Blackhawk Alnico 50w speaker (their version of the Alnico Gold). For tubes I have a Tung-Sol 12ax7 (current production) a NOS JAN GE 5751, #6 JJ EL84s, and a Chinese 5AR4. I usually run both volume and tone knobs at 12 o'clock as that seems most balanced across the frequencies of most guitars I have run through it. Is there a possibility that there is something wrong with this amp that is causing this or have I just not cracked the "Mazerati Code"? I know Paisley used these amps a lot around the time of his 2nd and 3rd albums and his tone never sounded brutally bright with a Telecaster like this. Please let me know what you guys think! Yeah, I hope I can figure it out too. I kinda need to thin my heard down as I am trying to fund a move to Nashville, but I don't want to let this amp go before feeling like I gave it a fair shake.

I don't have much problem with treble on my Mazerati version 2. I am playing a Crook T style that has a darker bridge pickup. My CS Nocaster I just roll a little bit of highs off if needed and of course my Les Paul has no issues with spiky highs. My mazerati has Celestion Blues which can be trebly.

this might sound odd...but what value pots do you have in your tele? they should be A250K....if they are 500K, they will probably be too bright. I've seen that a lot, people having the wrong pots installed. and also, check the height of the pickups....the higher they are, the more treble you'll get. And finally, (i know you changed speakers, but you didn't say what ones you tried)....Alnico speakers are inherently bright/chimey... maybe a different speaker might make a difference, also open/closed back cab can change the sound pretty drastically too.
just a thought.
ps.... where are you running the tone knob?

Hey Jacques,
All my teles have 250K pots for volume and tone. One had a 500K when I bought it and I changed that out in short order because it was way too bright.
Speaker I have tried in this amp: Eminence Red Fang Eminence Wizard WGS Veteran 30 (darker version of Vintage 30) WGS ET65 (clone of Celestion G12-65) WGS Invader 50 (higher powered green back) WGS Blackhawk 50 (their version of Celestion Gold)
of these speakers the Invader 50 and Blackhawk 50 have been the best matches, but still too bright with some guitars. All speakers were broken in with at least 20 hrs of John Mayer's Battle Studies album pumped through them before installing them in the 1x12 combo. I don't have a closed back option on the combo cab.

I run my tone knob on my V2 at 6 o'clock and have no problems with treble overkill while playing my tele. I set the tone at noon with my P-90 equipped Les Paul. I use a Z 2-10 cab and a 1-12 with a WGS Reaper 30 Watt speaker in a Lopo cab. It's the best match I've found. You can get all the twang you need or it can sound as fat & warm as you want.

just out of curiosity, do you know that the "tone" knob on the Mazerati is not the same as a "tone" knob on the guitar? it doesn't roll off the high frequencies as you go left. It actually fattens up as you turn it to the right... just a thought. you didn't mention anything about the tone knob on the amp. (please don't take this as an insult...i'm really trying to solve your problem...
