Being a longtime user of the Ray i have recently just discovered how sweet the lo input jack sounds. I use my Ray for everything from clean to mean. I never have tried this before til now. It seems to my ears that some of the highs are not there but when usind heavy OD it soumds so creamy. The Ray just keeps making ya. ;D. Theres no substitute for simplicity.

I hear ya Jamie. I ran mine last night in the Lo sounded great in a small club we played. The Ray is currently my favorite Z . From Paisley to Rawk, this one get's it done. Sounds great with ALL overdrives on my board. The effects loop for delays/verb is a god-send. Good vibes and good tones to you brotha!

I almost exclusively use the Lo input. Gotta have that crystal clear chime. If I wanted a dirty amp I'd buy a Ghia...
Oh wait! I did.

Dirty GHIA??? I have never played one. I use the Ray for the pristine cleans too, however im getting old and Lazy. the days of packing the SRZ for Dirt is sometimes a hassle unless on a big stage. I have discovered the Ray really Rocks when pushed and it cuts through like the amps of the 60's and 70's,.. I have had people come up to me at shows and swear they thought i was playing through a Marshall until they say that lil 3 knob Red Box, it leaves them gonna have to try a Ghia ;D

For years I've played a strat and plugged into the Ray's low input. Lately I've been playing humbucker guitars and found that I like the Ray's high input for humbucker guitars. I thought that I liked the low input because it allowed me to run the volume control higher but am now thinking I was wrong and liked the low input with single coils because it's not as bright? It's apparent I've no idea what I'm talking about, except for this fact; the Ray is still my favorite amp for any type of music and it likes all my pedals.

Howdy, Happy Carmen Ghia owner chiming in. I can't afford another Z anytime soon, and threads like this just kill me, LOL! I must discipline myself to stay away from the Stangray section!

I'm a maz38 guy and I just got a ray. Everyone talks about how clean they are but mine starts to break up at around 1 with pafs. Is this normal?

I'm a maz38 guy and I just got a ray. Everyone talks about how clean they are but mine starts to break up at around 1 with pafs. Is this normal? If you mean 1 on the dial and not 1:00 then yes then I would say that's not normal but what's normal for tone. One of the things that guitarist love about beautiful tone is how the amp colors the tone. Back to your question if it's 1 approx 7:30 on the volume control breakup is abnormal but again your definition of breakup could be different than what many of us call breakup and that's fine, really. How does the amp sound with the volume at 1:00? It should get OD tones and when you roll back the guitar volume control it should clean up wonderfully. If not, I would try swapping out tubes. It could be one of your output tubes is starting to breakdown. It could be the ef86 coloring or starting to breakdown. My experience with ef86s has been when they breakdown, they stop working all together but anything is possible. Could be the phase inverter 12ax7 or the rectifier??? For what I call clean, your ray should be clean with PAFs up to 9:00 from there it starts to add a little hair ( I do mean little) until you get to noon. Past noon the OD starts building. The ray can rock hard when dimed, especially with ceramic speakers. Not high gain tone but nice OD. Hope this helps. And congrats on picking up a great amp. Hopefully you will reward you with great tone. If you can, try it lots of different speakers it's a chameleon type of amp, IMHO.

I played an.outdoor show today. man it was blistering HOT! My fay was cooking too. I had the volume around 1100 oclock pushing it with a timmy and A BB . Man was it so swweet. I switched back to th hi input and played mostly with humbucker guitars. My Z2x12 cab loaded with a gold and a heritage GH 30 was ;D i wish my ray would breakup sooner sometimes. But mine stays pretty darn clean til about 200 but its very very loud at that point! The Ray Rules!!

The 'Ray and the Ghia make a great pair. Yes, but a Ray (through a pair of Blues) with an EZG-50 into a Z-best will haunt your forever.
