I've been reading and talking to some dealers about the Galaxie. I'm trying to determine what level of gain/saturation the OD channel has at reasonable, small club volume. A couple of guys said it is similar to a JCM-800. Someone also said it is very similar to the OD on the 6545 and SRZ-65. Also, is the OD smooth/creamy or more on the rough side? How do you control the amount of saturation?
Opinions and descriptions on the OD please guys!

IMO; Lots of drive on channel 2 from the get-go. The OD is very smooth, smoother than the SRZ to my ears. There is no control over saturation other than amp volume level and guitar volume. Excells with 2x10's

Have played a couple. Wouldn't have ever thought of comparing the tone on either channel to a JCM800 or SRZ. Very, very different animals.
Channel 2 reminded me of a dimed Fender Bassman with fast breakup GT 6L6s being goosed by a wide open gain modded Tubescreamer (Keeley/Analogman TS808/TS9). Very smooth top, tons of sustain, no chunky low end (gain channel seems to be voiced just like a TubeScreamer in that regard). Gain can get out of control and the mids muddy/farty pretty quick. If you're after gobs of gain at a low volume, it's there.

Lot's of amps kinda do a JCM800 thing, but this one ain't one of 'em. 6L6 Vs. EL34 in the output section sets them apart right away. I played a Galaxy for a while, it sounded nothing like my Silver Anniv. Mr.Weller seemed to nail it with his response.

Having been in the repair business for a little while now, nothing sounds like a JCM800, except the real thing. I'm not a Marshall guy, but the 800 definitely is high on the list of Marshalls to have. Funny thing is that most of the 800's I've worked on have been converted to use EL34's. I recently had my hands inside one that was still original and using 6550's, and to me it was easily the best sounding one I've heard to date. Back to the thread: the Galaxie has got it's own sound, kind of rude and raw if that makes any sense. And like the rest of Mike's amps, it sounds like alot of others, while at the same time sounding like nothing else you've ever heard.

I totally agree with you on the JCM-800 with the 6550's. I had a used white 2x12, 50 watt, 20th Anniversary, JCM-800 with GE 6550's and that was one of the biggest, fattest, chestiest combo amps I've ever heard. Unfortunately, it picked up radio stations at my house almost as well as my cheap, Emerson radio/alarm clock! I dumped it because I couldn't record without getting FM broadcasts on the tape. My JCM800 Silver Anniversary has EL-34's in it. Best sounding Marshall I've played. I use it as a high gain amp and I like to hear the output section break up as well as the preamp section. Then again, my tastes seem to be very different than the majority of the members here too.

Hmm.
That's interesting (Marshall-wise). I had a couple of old Marshalls wayyyy back in the day. Both were loaded with 6550s, both sounded excellent.
Way did I sell them again? Oh, yes, the flames...
