I took the long way around the barn on this. I had two Lopo 1x12 cabs and swapped various speakers (Blue, Gold, Silver Bell, Blue Dog) around in them for over a year before decidng on the speaker combo I liked best with the Ray. Turned out to be the Blue plus the 50 watt ceramic Blue Dog. I then ordered an unloaded J Design 2x12 cab and sold the Lopos. The Blue\Gold was a close second but I liked the Gold better in a 1x12 cab anyway so that made the decisiion easier. I've never played the Ray through a two Blue cab but I think I would prefer the Blue\Gold or even a Gold\Gold combo. The Blue as a stand alone speaker was always missing something balance-wise for me so I imagine that I would feel the same way about two Blues. Many, many others would disagree however.

I had my Ray going into a 2 X 12 with two blues. It sounded great, but was encouraged by other folks here to replace one of the blues with a gold. Big improvement, never went back. Much better bottom. The blues alone would get kind of loose at times, much better with the gold added in.

I think my top two would be a gold and a blue in series, followed by a single gold. Two blues is ok, but I like the added low end of a gold in there.

I think the Ray sounds really good through a Zbest. Golds, blues, G12h30's you bet.

I am a new member. I hope within the next two weeks, I am going to be the proud owner of Stang Ray head.
I have a 2x12 Fender Supersonic cab loaded with 1 Tone Tubby Alnico (original H1 cone) and 1 ceramic 40/40 Tone Tubby. I feel like this will be a good match for the Stang Ray. Hopefully I can give some feedback soon.
This cab was a closed back, but I converted it to an open back. The TT's need some room to breath imo. I got such a great deal on it at a local music store I couldn't pass on it. It had been in the store quite awile, so they basically sold it to me at cost. They even removed the Celestion V30 speakers and took off an additional $100.00.

I will make a deposit tomorrow on a like new/used Dr. Z head. I found it today at a local music store. I didn't go with the Stang Ray however. I have decided to go with the EZG-50.
I made this choice because of my desire to own a more American amp. My plan, is to also purchase a Remedy sometime in the future. This will cover the Black Face and Plexi thing. 2 of my favorite vintage amps, along with the Tweed.
I should have it in my posession within the next 2 weeks. I will pos pics then.

So the ? now is. Why do the 2x12's in a Stangray Head\Cab combo always come with blues? If gold's are a better option. Still not a Stangray owner but waffling between that and a ZWreck..

Blues are cheaper? ? Good luck on the Stangray, I love mine but find it hard to play though anything else anymore but my new Remedy sounded pretty good dirty in church today. Also guys when you give your speaker suggestions could you describe how your running them? Clean or dirty, pushing them really hard. thanks

I had a cab that came from Z with a Weber Blue and a Weber Silver Bell (both AlNiCo speakers). Sounded amazing! The silver gave it more bottom, but kept the alnico tone in check too.
Probably my favorite cab of all time.

I may be committing a sin right here, but.... what about a stock zbest? Don't lash me on this one! ;D Not at all. Every report I've heard of a Stang into a Z-best said it sounds great. I pretty much like a Z-best with anything, though. That said, I'm happy with my pair of Blues and not looking to change. JH

Much better bottom. The blues alone would get kind of loose at times, much better with the gold added in. Wayne I swapped out one of my Blues for an EVM12L once. It's the polar opposite of a Blue. The bottom end was HUGE and tight and overall the cab sounded just fantastic because the Blue would break up and the EVM12L stayed clean forever, and this added a complexity to the tone that was addictive. Alas, I sold the EVM, and the extra 15# in the cab was not so fun when it was in. It made me REALLY want to try a Z-best with an EVM and a Gold.

I love the EVM/L's I have tried it with the Gold its Huge, almost too much bottom. Sounds great with single coil guitars, I have several Original EVM/L's they are very cumbersome but well worth it. I like them in my 4x12 cab mixed with mojo GH 30's or the G12-65's only problem the 4x12 is hardly ever used. I'm gettin too old and have a worn out back

Probably my favorite cab of all time. The Weber Blue\Silver combo is magic. I did it with 50 watt ceramics rather than alnicos. The Silver eventually went into my Maz 18 NR.
