Hey all, I'm currently getting ready to purchase my first Z but I can't decide Between the ray or the rx jr. I play jazz fusion and use a lot of pedals. I don't use much gain at all. I'm currently playing thru a Mesa transatlantic t15. I am concerned the ray might be too loud for me, I play mostly small to medium rooms. My concern about the rx jr is does it break up quickly? I want something that stays cleanish so I can get my sound with my pedals. Any advice, wisdom or help would be great! Thanks

IMHO the RX JR is a very versatile amp. I've played it cranked and clean for country and I have never been disappointed. No concern with playing a medium room and it sounds great when miked for larger rooms. FYI...even though I absolutely love my JR. I am having serious GAS for a Z Wreck with the Stangray third on the list of "must haves".

I have both. Different Beasts.
Rx Jr Can get quite loud, VERY versatile amp, gotta learn it though. I like the gain/Overdrive from the OD switch, and/or preamp up much more than pedals Can get quite loud, doesn't break up that quickly unless you have the OD on, and the volume up. With the Master Maxxed, and the OD off, it has good headroom for a smaller wattage amp.
LOVE the Stangray, but do not consider it versatile. It's my favorite clean amp. Haven't tested that many pedals with it, but I prefer others amps for distortion. Some of my pedals seem to knock it over the top, can get a bit bright.

Or a Maz JR...sorry, just browsing here and looked at this thread. I have a Maz Jr 212 combo. Very versatile. Good amount of clean, takes pedals well. Head over to the 18 section and ask some questions. Seems like people that have multiple Z's all have or have had a JR and can give you some really good feedback.

love my rx jr. can't recommend it enough. it does everything from voxy chime to marshally grit and gets very convincing hiwatt/pink floyd tones. And it is LOUD (if you want it to be)! with a lot of headroom. The master volume feature and the OD switch are killer features. and it takes pedals incredibly well. i use it like you're saying you will, as a clean platform and then using pedals for grit and stuff and i couldn't be happier. i think it would fit your need perfectly.

Trust me Man...go with the 'scrip-jr. You will be amazed at how versatile it is! I have serial #008, and it is a red-head, and when I hook it to a 2 X 12"-cab with Greenbacks or G-12-65's, I can do a pretty convincing "Plexi" tone, and the "Overdose" feature should be an option on ALL Z's. The Master-Volume is "POST PHASE-INVERTER" and that makes a HUGE difference in blending your Pre/Post ,if you will, and you will notice right away that you have a great-deal of clean headroom for an 18-watt, EL-84 powered Amp! The controls on this Amp are also very, very interactive for this type of platform as well. Buy this Amp, you will LOVE this little 'Tone-Monster'!!! I found it is a lot better Amp than the Maz-18 in ALL departments, and you will too! Take Care, and ENJOY, 'cause the Doctor is on CALL!!! David...Halifax, Canada.
