I had some time this evening to start playing the JAZ. I'm finding some nice tones in there with a Strat; have not tried other guitars yet. I'm going to have to start keeping track of different settings I like. The tremolo is so sweet -- wow! With moderate settings it almost seems to disappear when you're playing a lot of notes, but let one ring out or hit a chord and it just hangs there, with that seductive pulse. The midrange seems a little overwhelmed by the bass. Had to go the MAZ Jr BW-approved method of turning bass all the way down and then bringing it up until it just is having an audible effect. I suppose this may change a bit as the speakers break in.

With the mids above 1:00 you will notice that the bass will become a little less overwhelming. For a Brad Paisley tone I run the bass at 3:00 and hang out on the bridge p/u. For most other tones I keeps the bass at 9:00 or lower.

Yes, I thought I heard that interaction. Thanks for confirming and for the settings tips I will try the BP with a Tele!
Another early impression is that the JAZ does a "better" blackface than the MAZ. Not a surprise given the tubes.

What's the reverb like, compared to the MAZ Reverb?
I have to live vicariously through JAZ owners for a bit.
Your comment Mike, on the trem has me pumped. It sounds like the awesome kind of trem that seems like it is reading your mind.

First impression is that the JAZ reverb is a little lusher and more organic sounding. By comparision, the MAZ 'verb, which I like but use sparingly, seems a tad bit more like an "add on." Don't hold me to this until I do a little more comparison work.

I agree with all points doctorice: The JAZ does a sweet blackface impersonation...I find myself running the amp much cleaner than I do with the MAZ. The reverb to me is MUCH better than on the (my) MAZ and the trem is unbelieveable. I too have noticed the "ducking" effect when playing a flurry of notes...

It's not just the output tubes...it's the lack of a "cut" control and the way the Doc voiced the amp.

Thanks for the additional points, Phil. Makes a ton of sense.
Really glad I got the JAZ. I need more time with it, but I could see taking it to a gig later this summer.

It's Great to hear that you're liking it Mike. Be sure to try your favorite delay pedal in the loop. It really gives a nice fullness to the effect. Different than the loop on my RAY. cheers

Congrats on your new baby. It's a great amp with a lot of personality.
I've had my JAZ for almost a year. i got it last summer before I went on tour. I've got the G12H30 speaker in mine and I always get complaints from sound guys and bandmates about how piercing the highs are. Usually they're not even at 12o'clock. Whether I play my 335 or my Tele, I end up turning the tone knob down just enough to take the highs out of the p/u's, so I don't sacrifice too much amp tone when I play on the neck. It took me a while to finally figure that out. I don't get the same complaints on my MAZ 18. I thought this would be going away by now, seeing that I play the thing all the time and the speaker is starting to break in. Maybe it's just the speaker and I should consider something different?
The only issue I have with the amp is it's consistency. Most of the time I think it sounds like the clear voice of a rock deity, but sometimes it sounds like a speaker is behind a thick sheet of wool. Does anyone else have that issue? Is that a blackface thing?
Just to hop on this tremolo train. It's got THE best sounding tremolo I've ever heard. So warm and smooth. I want to sign the hypothetical petition I've seen going around different threads to pair it w/ the Z-verb in its own unit. The Z-TremeVerb or Z-VerbLo or Z-LoVerb

Is that a blackface thing? I have experienced this with other amps -- JAZ has not been gigged yet -- especially when playing outside. Some of it is the changing acoustic environment probably. It also feels like the speaker sounds muffled when I play outdoors on a humid day. I speculate that moisture is affecting the speaker cone, but I'm not sure that is possible. Thanks for the tip on tone.

How does it's headroom compare to a MAZ, or Remedy?

Will do Took the day off today. Been at it since 7am. After 10am or so I got it up to volume. Been a fun day. But my fingers hurt . You are correct, the trem is excellent. I prefer it to the trem on my Victoria, and is nearly identical in feel to the trem in a 65 amps LilElvis I used to have.... which I consider the best trem ever. The reverb is excellent as well. Although I really like the verb on the MAZ, this one seems much more flexible. It can do the ambient reverb like the MAZ, or really get spacey and caverous. The best one knob reverb I have used. I played it for 6 hours straight in with a LesPaul, twisting knobs before I tried any pedals. It takes them excellently as well. Very pleased with this one. I took a lunch break and put in a Celestion Gold I had kicking around. It will stay in there . What a great amp. The only downside it my little "studio" is getting smaller It kinda feels like it's become invaded with Z's. A "Z" infestation if you will.

I tried it with an LP today and loved it. Stayed with a fairly clean sound. Will try rocking out some other day.

I'll dig up something from a soundboard and something from an audience recording.
Dave has owned a Route 66, Maz Sr., Mazerati V1, JAZ and EZG50.
He's finishing the Radiators "Last Watusi" starting tomorrow in NOLA. The last three night with this version of the Rads or maybe the Rads at all.

My JAZ came today. Have had my eye on the model for a long time and decided to pull the trigger before they were all gone. It is a combo with 1-12 Celestion gold. Also had Humbuckers Music put in an Air Brake. Played it for a couple of hours tonight. Very smooth reverb and tremelo. And am going to take to a gig tomorrow night and jump right in. The best surprise? My Carmen Ghia padded cover fits it perfectly. ;o)
