I posted in the Z wreck section the same sort of question, but I am just wondering how versatile the ray is. I don't really use pedals (delay, a little OD here and there and compression) so I want a versatile amp thats clean with a good crunch. I play a good bit of Brad Paisley and Brent Mason styled stuff, but also have Zeppelin and many different styles of music on the set list. What amp would you guys recommend. Thanks for the help!

I have a Ray. I absolutely love it and will never part with it. An amazing incredible amp!
What amp would I recommend for you? A Z Wreck or a Remedy. If you don't want to use pedals - you may not get enough crunch out of the Ray for what you want. The Wreck is a world class amp and will do what you need it to. Go that route.

Much appreciated. Im just looking for a head I can travel with. Now that the wreck is available as just a head that's probably the route im going to be taking. Thanks again.

I had the same question but didn't really want to buy a Z Wreck. I use a few pedals, OD, Delay and Comp. Would love to put a Stangray thru its paces but none around me to try. Maybe I can find a used one and go that route.

I have 9 Z amps. If my house was on fire, I would run in to save my Stingray. I've never heard an amp come even close to the tone of that amp.

I love my Ray. If you don't mind cranking it and playing with humbuckers you can get some pretty gnarly dirty tones out of it. See my video in the "Videos" section. SC245 in a cranked Ray. It's pretty beautiful sounding.

It depends on what you want. The Stangray is a great clean amp and takes pedals very well. The amp is a fantastic gigging amp and I love the chime I get through my 212 blue/gold speakers.
The Zwreck amp is designed to go from clean to mean by using your volume on the guitar. So the clean head room of the Stangray is greater then the Zwreck. I would go with both but your probably not able to do that. LOL

I've not played the Z Wreck but have heard it do it's magic and it's a wonderful amp. If you want clean to mean I would think it will cover those bases well.
I don't need to tell yo about the Ray's clean tones, it's that good. I can get great OD tones on my Ray. There are many great OD pedals to turn the Ray into a rock-n-roll machine. There's a great thread listing many different OD pedal options in the Stangray section. As Jamie stated, I also like the ray's natural break up, with single coils and humbuckers. I run the volume control around 2:00 and use the guitar volume to clean up the amp and goose the front end with a clean boost or OD box. And for rock gigs, i use a cab with ceramic speakers. With the Ray that makes a huge difference. Otherwise I prefer alnico speakers for the country and southern rock sounds.

While the Ray isn't a very dirty "lead amp", I find that it takes pedals so well that a Ray with a good pedal can run right with many of the greatest dirty amp tones you'll find. The clean of the amp is truly special. A great clean is a wonderful foundation for a good dirty tone. Imagine the greatest AC30 tone you've ever heard, add sweeter highs, more balanced mids, and way more bottom end it's almost as good as a 'Ray. Almost. ;D

To me, the Ray has the best clean sound I have ever heard in an amp. All you need is a few pedals to get the gain sounds you may be looking for. Of course, you may go thru many pedals looking for that special sound, but when you eventually do, you will be in tone heaven. There are many variables when trying to hone in on a particular tone, ie pickups you are playing thru. After much searching, I settled in on a Wampler Pinnacle 2 for distortion, a Zendrive for medium dirt, and a BK Butler Tube Drive for light gain. The Ray takes most pedals incredibly well, but there are some pedals that just dont work with it..and you will know as soon as you plug them in.

You may find one close by after all.

I played a StangRay once. I was very impressed immediately. It wasn't appropriate for my needs at the time (very Voxy) but it's the best Z amp I've heard. Really beautiful. I found the Z28 more versatile so I ended up with that. FWIW - the Z28 gets a nice Marshally crunch when turned up. If you want something in the Vox tone arena I think you'll love the StangRay.

Thanks for all the info guys! And I live in a small town in northwest South Carolina. As z owners go here I'm it haha! I know pretty much every guitar player in a 45 minute area, but if any of you have an amp, besides a maz, that you would like to show off to someone and you live near this area, I'll be on my way to Nashville before zfest next week and afterwards. Thanks guys! Im just 17 so I appreciate all the advice you guys have given! Much appreciated!
