I wanna hear if the Monza really is the loudest of the bunch. Using the same speaker(s), of course. My money would be on the Galaxie channel 2.

I will probably get a run at this later next week. I have a box full of effects pedals coming in the mail from old school FX that I need to play with too, should be a blast!
Maybe I'll run the Galaxie and the Monza thru my Zbest . . . .

Are you talking perceived loudness or actual measured SPL? ;D

Are you talking perceived loudness or actual measured SPL? ;D we could set up a real test with an SPL meter but that settle it once and for all. It would be much more fun if I give you all a subjective opinion then we can talk about it for a while!! lol Todd

To be safe, proper care and feeding, etc., the Galaxie needs a bias check with new power tubes.

set the bias late last week, amp sounds much better with a set of tubes in it that were not of the verge of blowing up! I'll get some time later this week and putting through some paces, I eventually have to give this one back to Mike (jaguarguy) so I better hurry Todd

blew it up again last night!! lol Mike (jaguarguy) came over for a visit and we were putting the amp thru some paces. I got a foot switch out to show him channel 2 and shortly after the amp quit on us again. Both channels, nothing, nadda. I did some stuff I learned at Zfest from the Doc and still nothing. Called Trock for some more ideas, finally we all agreed it must be the rectifier. I put in a different one and one of the power tubes was showing some arcing! New rectifier and powers tubes are in the works. This amp keeps teasing me! Get it running and start to dial it in . . . . . pop! lol Can't wait to really get to try it out. Its back at Mikes house now . . . . more to come Todd

It has been a while, refresh my memory, please. What tubes are using? What tubes have quit? Did it sound okay before they quit - that is, did it sound like maybe a resistor had quit too?

It has been a while, refresh my memory, please. What tubes are using? What tubes have quit? Did it sound okay before they quit - that is, did it sound like maybe a resistor had quit too? Hey Jan - thanks for asking. From what I understand, the amp sounded sick from the beginning. Todd took off the back and while playing one of the 6L6s arced. He replaced both of those with EH 6L6 and rebiased them. When we plugged in yesterday, it played for about 10 minutes on the clean channel and then switched to Channel 2 after two minutes or so the sound just died. We didn't have spare 5U4 but he had another rectifier within limits that we plugged in. No sound but you could see one of the 6L6 tubes flash. This morning I went to GC and purchased Mesa 5uR and 6L6s - dropped them and and it played with no issues. Did not bias it so I didn't play for long. Can anyone tell me what damage, if any, if I continue to play with tubes unbiased until I can get it biased? Don't want to take any chances blowing up a transformer or something! p.s. gonna get some NOS tubes for it and keep these for back-ups.

I was just wondering out loud if the amp had a bad resistor/capacitor causing the (premature?) failures. Your new tubes are probably real close to the shipped settings. Close. If it sounds great and is not hot enough to burn the head down, you are probably close. If you want to maximize tone and tube life, close needs confirmation by testing. You have seen this page, yes? drzamps.com/faqs.html Scroll down to "Troubleshooting".
