The KOT and FDII sound nothing alike to me. The FDII is more of a smooth, medium gain distortion pedal where the KOT is a clean boost and OD pedal. It's a little rougher around the edges when driven.

+1 to what jwr said. Also, the KOT has a slight mid-hump in all of it's "modes" (clean boost, OD, clean boost) that the FD2 does not have when in FM or comp-cut mode. Even then, the KOT's mid-hump is a slight one. Still more clarity & "transparency" than a standard tubescreamer. "More rough around the edges" is a good description. Not as rough as say, an OCD, but roughr than the FD2. Right now, both are on my board, and I'd LOVE to get rid of one, just don't know if I can... they do slightly different things. oh- don't know about the distortion setting, never used it. If I want more gain, I'll just stack the 2 sides of the KOT together, or boost the KOT with the FD2 ( a combination that works really well with my rig... too bad I don't play 80's hair metal anymore! )

The distortion setting on the KOT is nice, some what similar to the FDII. But not as dynamic and touch sensitive as using the OD setting on the KOT. If your looking for a distortion pedal I'd shy away from the KOT. It's a OD and Boost pedal lover's dream come true, but I don't look at it as a distortion box.

More on the Crunch Box:
I've had mine through both quiet & "WTF?!?" - volume amps. Not harsh or shrill at all. Apparently they made an adjustment to the tone control a while back, & there's an internal trimmer if you still need to tweak.
Sounds fantastic with either my tele or strat through my Maz Jr. Like a baby Marshall. A very, very angry baby. :-)
Overall, it sounds less "compressed" to me than your TS-9 knockoffs, & less like you stepped on a pedal. Although you can dial down the grit, *I* think it sounds best cranked, although there is an incredible amount of dirt to be had. Before I got this pedal, I used to crank the gain on every pedal, & control the amount with the guitar volume, but with the Crunch Box, I never turn it up over 2PM or so. Nice!
As always, YMMV.
