Hello everyone. I've had my Galaxie for a while, and it has worked out really well for me. However, I got pretty tired of hauling the head and Z Best in and out of shows; just too big and heavy. I found a used Z 1x12 open backed combo cab that I purchased a few months ago, and I've got the Galaxie loaded in it. Sold the Z Best. The speaker in the combo right now is a Celestion G12H-30 Anniversary, which is a speaker that I always liked in the past. However, I'm not digging it at all with the Galaxie. It is a bassy speaker, and the Galaxie is a very bassy amp. Overall it just sounds dull, no sparkle or crispness at all. I have a Celestion Blue in my Vox that I hooked up to the Galaxie at low volume; I liked the tone a lot, but obviously the 15W power handling is an issue. I used to have a Jensen P12Q that also sounded good with the Gal, but I didn't love the overdriven tone and it was a bit quiet.
So- what are your favorite 12" speakers open-backed with a Galaxie? I'm leaning towards a Celestion Gold, but that's a lot of cheese to plunk down on a speaker.

I don't have the combo, but my two favorite 12" speakers w/ the Galaxie are the Gold and the G12-65. My Gold is in an open-back configured Z Convertible. My G12-65 is in a closed-back configured Z Convertible.
I believe there were more than a few Galaxie 1X12 combos that left the shop w/ G12-65s in 'em.
Two Greenback type speaks sound pretty good, too.

I know I'm a little late for the party, but +1 for the G12-65. Mine is actually a WGS ET65 (G12-65 clone) and I like it a lot! But that said, I REALLY like my 2-12 with the Weber Blue/Silver Alnico combo in it. If it weren't for the hefty price tag, I'd love to try a Gold in my 1-12. It's not that I don't like the ET65, I'm just a bigger fan of Alnico speakers....... My 1-12 isn't a convertible, though, so I'm going to make and insert for it to try out the ET65 in a closed back configuration. That just might make me forget about putting a Gold in there. Oh yeah, I've also ran both cabs with Gal', and I'm hear to tell you, It's awesome! The Alnicos and the ET65 really compliment each other. Plus, I don't have to bend over to adjust the knobs, LOL! Anyway, good luck on your speaker search. It's always fun trying out new gear ;D!

Just a follow up... got an older G12-65 a few days ago, and installed it. I think it's a very good match for this amp. It is much better balanced than the G12H-30 it replaced; has a nice crackling midrange now that was lacking. Good strong bass, but very tight and not flabby. It's also less efficient than the G12H-30, which puts it at perfect stage volume. Overall, very happy- thanks for the recommendation.

I am using a Weber California with a paper dust cover. I love it in both channels because it provides a real solid clean tone and the paper dome allows the highs to be smooth. Distortion is more in the amp and any add on pedal tones you have. The emphasis with this kind of speaker allows the amp to exhibit more gain sensitivity and sustain over raw distortion.

After I heard the Z Wreck cab I broke down and bought a pair of Golds and have never looked back. I use my Gal with a single Gold in a Boogie Thiele cab, very close sound to a OB. I also got a great deal on a Weber Blue and Silver combo, 16 ohm, 30 watts that I put in my Z 2x12 for the Gal. Kind of funny but the Wreck cab running at 16 ohms was louder and had more bite than the Z 2x12 with the Webers at 8 ohms. Now I'm saving up for a pair of golds for the 2x12 cab and a pair for my tweed twin, ouch.

Resurrecting an old thread - has anyone ever tried a 1x12 Creamback (or Scumback equivalent) in the Galaxie? I thought I might give one a shot just to try something different.
