Hi All,
I have been using a MAZ 18 reverb head into a 1x12 cab for about two years for a blues/blues rock group and love it.
Normally the MAZ has plenty of power, but every once in a while I feel like I could use a bit more headroom. The logical step would be to "upgrade" to a MAZ 38, but I really think I might be better off with the JAZ, in 1x12 combo format, so that I could utilize the 1/2 power function, but I have a couple of concerns:
First off - does anyone miss the cut control?
and
Can any compare the 6V6 vs. EL84 power section?
Obviously, both are subjective, but I am looking for personal observations in order to try to make an educated guess as I don't have a dealer locally who has one in stock and would have to order.
Thanks!
Scott

I'd really like to see where this thread goes as well.

This a very good question. I am interested in any first hand knoweledge also. I love the MAZ I have. I also have a Remedy. Love them both.
I can only imagine good thinks of basically combining the front of the MAZ with the back half of the Remedy. Add trem, keep the reverb.....sounds very appealing.

The JAZ is one of the few Z amps that you almost never see being resold - must be a great amp!!!

I have both a MAZ Senior and Junior, JAZ on the way. It should be here on Wednesday.
I'll let you know over the next week how it stacks up!

I just auditioned the MAZ Jr NR 1x12 and the JAZ 20/40 1x12 for awhile today and I would say the JAZ seems to have a little more clean headroom. It wasn't as dramatic as one might think, considering the 18 watt vs 40 watt difference.
But as I said in another thread, the JAZ 20/40 really surprised me. The cleans were great, the clean with dirt was AWESOME, and the overdrive was pretty good too. Plus you get Trem and Verb!
I would say the things that make me inclined to get a JAZ 20/40 over a MAZ (or, likely, in addition to one eventually) are
- JAZ has more clean volume - JAZ master volume seems to not affect the tone as much (slightly better...not light years) - JAZ has a very nice tremolo - JAZ is a little more Fender sounding and less compressed- but not as "percussive" and Voxey, which many people love - JAZ has 1/2 power switch!

Thanks all.
Bobbyray: I noticed that you posted about the JAZ "killing" at a show (Then the unfortunate "rhythm section assault" on it on the drive home.
Any further observations you want to note?
Also - Did you get the amp sorted out after the mishap?
Thanks,
Scott

JAZ ordered. One MAZ on the way out? Maybe.

I've owned both and like the Jaz better. I have a 2x10 combo and it's a great amp. I say they both have close to the same amount of headroom. The Maz seemed a little louder at 9:00 on the volume than the Jaz. The Jaz is less aggressive and more Fender while the Maz is meaner with more high end chime.

Thanks Twangstang. It's all academic now, as I have a JAZ 1x12 combo on order-thanks to fellow forumites who alerted me to the fact that a certain retailer had them on "blow-out" pricing after recently being discontinued...Should be here in a couple of days!

I just ordered a Brake Lite for my Jaz. I'm getting nothing but positive comments about my tone from the band and FOH guys. Give the 10's some time to break in and the amp will sound even better. The trem is off the charts!

I really like the Z 10s in my MAZ, which is why I went that route with the JAZ. They sound great, especially after some break in time as you say. Have several Brake Lites too. They're pretty much a necessity, imo.
My amp is supposed to arrive today!

doctorice: Yes - That's the one - I think you and I nabbed the last two (or last one of each!) It is supposed to arrive tomorrow; I am psyched - especially since I have a gig on Friday and will be firing her up then!

Oh, and BTW, I too have a couple of Brakelights. Funny thing is that I use the BL mostly with non-Z amps!
I play in a rock cover band, where I use an old VHT Super 30 combo and the BL helps that amp sing at manageable volumes.
I also have a '68 silverface Deluxe and the BL lets me turn it up to 8 and wail away!

The Master on these is good, although it's not quite a master volume. I like the MAZ with no BL, so I understand what you're saying.
Hope all goes well with the gig. I probably won't get to use mine for a few days.

Mine was sitting on the front steps when I got back from the hospital, which is a story on a different thread. The box was a little rain-soaked, but amp is fine. Fired it up briefly and liked what I heard. Very early impression is that the front end response is not identical to a MAZ 18, but don't hold me to that. Also, I didn't realize there's a fan in this amp. At least I hope that's what I was hearing when I turned the power on.

Also, I've decided to let the MAZ 18 NR go. The JAZ has already been wedged into the former MAZ space. My other MAZ, with verb and bypass mod, is staying.

Even though the front end is similar the JAZ and MAZ are different animals. I think you need them both.

Thats funny Mike, I might do the exact same thing.
Hate to let that N/R go, but it's a matter of space.... nothing else.

Plus it gives me some "cover" if I want to buy an NR head at some future date. At the moment, though, as BW says "I got the itch but I ain't got the scratch."

The key is to play them stereo. Simply epic sounds when both are cranked. It's an immediate face melter.
