Let me see if I got this right.
You buy a tone monster from Dr. Z, and then gum up the tone with a $100 pedal?
As Dr. Phil (who went to the same medical school as Dr. Z) would say, "What were you thinking?"

As Dr. Phil (who went to the same medical school as Dr. Z) would say, "What were you thinking?" "I was thinking" that I like to get distortion sometimes without getting fired from the gig. "I was thinking" different pedals can create different tones, in addition to the stock amp. "I was thinking" that I can bypass the pedals whenever I like and plug straight into the amp. "I was thinking" that anyone who owns a Z amp, by definition, knows something about tone and has an idea of the advantages & disadvantages of pedals. "I was thinking" that there is a great group of players on this forum that support & respect each others opinions. "I was thinking" that your large, red "What were you thinking" is a bit offensive. What were YOU thinking?

Referring to the original post, I see your point, I'm kind of a guitar>cord>amp person most times, but there are always times when you want a change. I don't think that good quality pedals "gum" up the tone very much.
Stevie used a TS808 and a crybaby in front of his vibroverbs and supers (excellent amps, IMO) and his tone was uh..OK. Jimi used all kinds of crazy stuff in front of his plexis. Angus Young uses nothing, and his tone is great too.
[glow=red,2,300]I think you can have great tone either way[/glow]

I'm thinking with only 6 total posts you might want to spend a little time around here and get to know some folks before you make a blanket statement like that which will immediately make some folks not take too kindly to you. Pedals are just one more creative tool to be used to make music... if they don't inspire you, fine, but... I'm also thinking that you must certainly pretend know more about tone, gear, and music than Brad Paisley, Buddy Whittington, David Grissom... All of who are noted Z amp users that also choose to run pedals through their Z amps... but certainly they must be doing it wrong since they're making a living playing music, right? I'm also thinking you've never played an EchoCzar. ;D Also, you can get your points across on this forum with using big red letters... Folks on here actually tend to read what is posted for the most part.

It wasn't so much offensive as it was 'blanket ignorance', and that's something this board seems to avoid for the most part, which is kind of refreshing compared to many of the other gear forums out there... Just trying to keep it that way!

I agree with this to a point. For a long time it seemed counter-intutive to me to buy a fantastic sounding tube amp only to put a solid-state pedal in front of it. Imagine if Z produced an amp with a solid-state preamp into a tube power amp; would it be as well received as an all-tube signal path? That said, I do use OD/Boost pedals for variances in tone (generally only with my non-master vol amps). I also can say honestly that every pedal takes something away from my tone. The best tone I have is guitar into Ghia. Period! The SHO, FatBoost, AM OD9, and forthcoming ZenDrive all provide necessary variances for a working cover band guiratist, but not one sound better than the guitar directly into the amp.
That's what I'm thinking

Giving the benefit of the doubt, I'd say he made a joke that was off the cuff and not too well thought out. He didn't think it would be offensive but it was to some. I'd suggest profuse apologies to the forum in general and lets make a new start and all be friends again.

"Cool Hand Luke" !!
rick - yes, I see that w/ my Z28. My guitar sounds different, too. But I play electric guitar, and it's in my nature to add electric things to it. So, I accept it as part of the tradeoff for 'extended configuration options' in what I'm playing. And I fully recognize the working cover band requirements...my board is still hosting 3 different distortion/OD thingamajigs. That gig's gone, so the board is evolving.
billyguitar, and G'Ol.... I dig what you're saying, and I pretty much only spend time in this forum now for these very reasons. Good honest people, and a nice & high signal to noise ratio. Having said that, I'll shut up now!

2. The Dr. Phil reference is funny. ;D

Word to the wise(asses). Sarcasim doesn't come over very well in print. I would agree with you ziptiy, Z amps don't really need pedals to sound good, but they are so much fun. Now for the big group hug............alright, now don't we all feel better? Now back to our regular schedualed program. You guys are a bunch of dumb rooster sucking sons of ******...stupid filters, you know what I meant (sarcasim) ;D Thank God for smileys.

I know funny...."PIMPIN LID" was funny! ;D And you know whats hilarious....no kidding...I know this is not a pedal related tid-bit but it's funny and I gotta tell you.........stopped by the store my dad runs and..... MY DAD BOUGHT AN EST^B^N guitar and AMP!!!!!!!!! I'm not kiddin... he plays like, three cords (2 more than I play) a couple of different ways just for fun... but Man when I SAW that I fell out laughing! he didn't get what was so funny and I didn't have the heart to tell him about our little joke..... the really sad part about it is he's got an ALL maple, beautiful TAYLOR acoustic (worth 20 Est^b^n guitar/amps) and I'm like....WHY did you get this? you've got a great guitar; you don't play, already? just had to share my shock and awe with you guy's and this seemed as good a place as any.... the up side is he got volumes one and two of the masters teachings so theres something to build on... he'll be able to play greensleeves and some other equally useless songs.... (no offense to the guy who wrote greensleeves just in case your still alive and happen to be a member of this forum...) I'm not mad at you...... I am just so disappointed in you dad

For the record and in summary; I wasn't offended by the post but I also saw little humor in it. Just not particularly funny. I was also disappointed in the author's response to the controversy.
But now with the ever popular reappearance of "pimpin' lid", I'd say we've moved on! I always smile at "PIMPIN' LID"!

As Dr. Phil (who went to the same medical school as Dr. Z) would say, "What were you thinking?" Never critique a man's rig the day after he quits smoking. Sorry for the previous banter fellow Z-nuts. Yesterday was not a good day for me. I really like this forum and especially it's members and I don't want to create any bad vibes. Something about that post just rubbed me the wrong way. The original post came across to me as a somewhat awkward endorsement of how good Dr Z's amps sound on their on merit. I can relate to that because at the end of the day of trying every pedal under the sun, I usually gig with maybe one or two, maybe NO pedals. I have box loads of pedals, just ordered another one yesterday...half the fun is experimenting and hoping you stumble across the pedal that REALLY is the one. I've yet to find it...including the coveted Zendrive, which is cool, but not THE ONE. At the present, I'm in the middle of the love/hate deal with compressors & delays...but since there are some country gigs coming up, chasing down the correct tone/feel is once again at hand. Pretty happy with the AD 9, comps another story...

spssssssssssst...Buddy doesn't use pedals, unless you count a tuner Lefty, this is a little OT now for where this thread has gone, but I'd swear I've heard a couple times that Buddy has been using the TC Jauernig Luxury Drive... I wasn't 'offended' either... terryg summed it up great with analogy about the 'high signal to noise ratio' at this forum compared to others... That's what bugged me about this thread; that it didn't really fit with the positive atmosphere around here. Also glad this thread seems to have moved on, so I'll also get out of the way now! Oh, but one last thing zipity -- you can quit the negative PM's... they're not wanted or appreciated at this point.
