Hey everybody!
I'm a huge fan of Dr. Z, and I've been an avid fan of Brad Paisley's for a looong time. I even got Bill Crook to build me two Paisley Tele's which are my main axes. At the current time, I can't afford a Z-Wreck. However, if I sell some of my stuff, I will be close enough to do it. I don't play my PRS Custom 22 anymore, and I figure I can get at least $1,750 for it, and I have a Marshall half-stack that I can probably get $800 for, and a Fender HRDx I can get $450 for. If I sell those, I can pay the remainder for it. Here's my question:
Should I splurge and get the Z-Wreck, which I would mostly use for garage-band or church use, and get an air-brake for when I'm at home? Or would I be better off getting something smaller like an RxJr? I've always wanted that BP tone, but I don't need anything so big because it would be over-kill. Would I be able to use the air-brake and still get that amazing tone? I like that over-driven tone like on "Playing with Fire" and most any of the other stuff BP does. It's truly my dream amp, but it's just a big investment, aka my only amp. I realize that most of the tone comes from the hands, so please be gentle on me.
Thank you.
-Alex

It's up to what you will be doing with it but I think you should go for the right tool for the right job.

Sounds like if I want to sound like BP, I need BP's amp right?

First of all to sound like your hero you don't need the same amp. If it's out of your range I would get something more like the RX JR. Wampler pedals is coming out with a Paisley overdrive that will get you the sound your looking for without breaking the bank. I own a EZG50 with a 4x10 cabinet and with a od pedal set very low I can get Brad tones. The amp is a starting point but even owning the same guitars and amps as an artist will not make you sound like them. Here si the link to the paisley pedal. It's not out yet but should be soon. www.wamplerpedals.com/paisleyAnyway how do those Crook teles sound. I've been looking for a Danocaster tele right now because Keith Urban plays one but am probably settling on an early Fender custom shop 51 Nocaster.

Well I'm sure you would love it, but they are LOUD amps ! Maybe see if any dealers nearby have one to try first. It's an awesome sounding amp though !

A Z-Wreck, is NOT gonna make you sound like Brad. A Z-Wreck IS an awesome tone machine. Brad "Crook + cord + Z-Wreck" tone?? Yessir.
Just remember....Brad has a gazillion gizmos/amps between his guitar & the FOH/record mix.
I had the good fortune to play one(straight in), WFO on stage, in a band setting, and bruthr.....it IS, everything it's hyped up to be.
That said, if you really want it, & can justify the cost, (it's worth every penny) go for it.
But....Z has many more offerings, for far less $$.....there is not a bad tone in the lot.
fwiw.........

Gotta say, unless your garage band or church enjoy LOUD music, and you don't mind lugging big kit around all the time, I'd think about something smaller. Don't get me wrong, from what I see/hear, the Z Wreck is the Rolls Royce of the Z range, and sounds truly stellar, but then again, I've had 4 smaller Z amps and every on of them sounds spectacular too. As I understand it, BP plays a big stable of amps including a bunch of StangRays etc., and yet he always sounds like BP, so maybe you don't need to bankrupt yourself right off of the block? But whatever Z you go for, it'll be the best amp you'll ever buy, IMHO of course ;D Cheers Pete ;D

I love the Crooks, they're extremely versitile and are real work horses. I have a lindy fralin neck pup and a voodoo bridge pup (recommended by Bill Crook) that both have a very dynamic range. He also uses the vintage 3 Saddle bridge with the bottom two strings having a brass saddle instead of nickel so the high E won't have that ice-pick-to-your-ears high end. I also opted for the G-bender, which works great. The price is high, similar to the Wreck, but it's so versitile that I don't need other guitars.

I'm no expert, but I have been pining after Brad's tone for years. IMHO, a pedal (the Wampler Paisley OD) will NOT get you Brad's tone. His overdriven/solo tone, maybe. But Brad's tone come from his AMPS, not from pedals. He sprinkles his pedals like spices into his "amps stew." If you want Paisley's tone, I say you need a Stangray. A Mazerati or Ghia would also get the job done. An RxJR as well... Time Well Wasted was an Rx (not Jr). I had an RxJR and it's a dead ringer for the TWW tone. Personally, I prefer Brad's Mud On The Tires tones (mostly Mazerati & some Ghia) and my favorite Brad tone was when he filmed Austin City Limits (the last time he was on), and his Xmas album, which is pure Stangray. A tele, a Stangray, and an 808 or Zendrive...maybe the Wampler, and a slapback... Brad's been known to use the Maxon AD999 & Aquapuss. FYI... it's true you don't need your hero's gear to sound like him, but Dr Z's are VERY unique amps. Nothing I've played sounds or feels quite like them. IMHO you NEED a Z to get Paisley's tone. PAISLEY might be able to get his tone with a Peavey, but us mere mortals can't.

Listen to Paisley do his demo on the 2 Hour Dr. Z DVD. He plays through a bunch of Z's and somehow manages to sound like BP through all of them.
I'd go RX Jr., new Paisley Wampler pedal and a good delay and compression pedal. That will take you to the mountain - you will need great tone from the pick and fingers to take you up it.

Do what you like but you can get a two of Brad's amps for the price of one Z-Wreck. A RxJr {plenty loud} with a set of Blues will put your mind to ease. Then if you really think you need the louder cleaner Ray tone you'll have plenty $$$$ left over to buy one and there have been plenty RxJr's and Ray's floating around lately.......
