Hey all,
here we go again ... another endless OD debate ... LOVE IT!
I'm "in the market" for a low to medium gain OD pedal to go with my (soon to arrive) 6545. I already have OCD, DistortionPro and Tonebone Trimode that I use for my high-gain sounds, I might loose the Trimode once I get the 6545 ... I'll see. I do need a lower gain OD for some chord based stuff that needs a little more "hair" to it. This is what I'm looking for: - round, fat and crunchy ... almost like a cranked up 18watt - preferably dual mode (extra boost stage is a big plus) - no mid hump ... I'm not a TS fan - good clarity, so chords don't get all mushed up - ultra-transparency is not a big issue with me since I'm not looking for a clean boost - availability is an issue as well, love to get a Tim or a Timmy, but I've been calling Paul for 3 weeks now and can't get in touch with him ... I think his wife might think I'm stalking him ... something I can order and get in reasonable time is definitely preferred
Any suggestions are most welcome.
Thanks!

Fulltone Fatboost. It sounds good with most amps and doesn't have a ton of gain. Can give you a big volume boost if ya want.

Barber Silver LTD. Most amp like, transparent low to medium gain OD pedal I've tried, including the Zendrive. After hearing this pedal, I sold my Fulldrive on Ebay days later. If you want to step on a pedal to give you some extra hair to extra crunch, without sounding like you just stepped on a pedal, this is THE one. Lots of harmonics, no middle hump, little to no compression, very touch sensitive, low noise. built like a tank and all for $125.00. You can get these direct from Dave Barber with a trial period of a few days. Dave Barber is to the Pedal world what Dr. Z is to the amp world. He makes a high quality product at a reasonable price and he's a cool guy to deal with. G-R-E-A-T customer service. Try one. Pedalgeek.com usually has these in stock as well and is a good company to do business with. I haven't tried the Tim or Timmy, but I know some guys who have and ranked the Silver LTD right up there with them. There are two versions of this pedal...LTD & Silver LTD. The Silver is a bit less colored. Here is a link to some sound clips. www.barberelectronics.com/sounds.html

Just checked out the Barber sound clips ... me like it a lot! I know they're not to be trusted but right now that's the only reference I got.
Does the Silver LTD have less gain then the regular one or just a flatter EQ?

Does the Silver LTD have less gain then the regular one or just a flatter EQ? From what I remember, the gain structure is about the same for both. The Silver was specifically designed for a flatter EQ. Call Dave Barber and he will definitely take time to explain. He's a sharp guy who doesn't mind describing the tonal differences of his products. I've called him a number of times, and once specifically for your exact question. BTW, those LTD sound clips are very accurate. The pedal does sound like that.

People have been raving about the Line 6 verbzilla in another thread. Has anyone a/b'd the Line 6 Crunchtone against anything else?

Thanks guitarman1, just ordered the Silver LTD from musictoyz ... tried the pedalgeek.com but since I'm in Canada they don't have their International shipping set up properly yet so it made me a bit nervous.
Zendrive sounded pretty good too but 12 weeks backordered and judging by the sound clips it was more like a TS with no mid hump ... a bit fizzy on top end, not saying that's bad, just that LTD sounded more of what I was after. Fatboost was another one I looked into but looks more like a clean boost then actual OD and I'm still on a waiting list for a Fulldrive2 Mosfet, my pedalboard will start to look like a Fulltone display case ... Man, it never ends does it ... the gear junkie obsession ...
Thanks all!

Man, it never ends does it ... the gear junkie obsession ... Amen to that brother and your very welcome! From what you described you were looking for, I think you've made the best choice. I had a Zendrive and it excelled more at Dumble (especially Robin Ford/Larry Carlton) tones. I sent mine back because it picked up FM stations better than a cheap Nippon transistor radio. Alf sent me a new one, but that had a broken switch. Alf finally just gave up and sent my money back. I REALLY wished that pedal worked, 'cause I think it's the best sounding Dumble type pedal out there. I've owned The Menatone Howie, HAO Rumble Mod & Stampede SOV-1 and liked the Zendrive's sound the best. While excelling at that sound, it is colored with a vowel like tone that I couldn't dial out for getting transparent, pushed amp breakup . Anyway, I hope you love the pedal. Please post back with your findings.

iggs should try out a Crowther Audio Hotcake or a Bluesberry Hotcake (or a Double Hotcake that should be out soon!)...

I think my Keely BD-2 does what your looking for pretty well. I haven't tried a non modded Blues Driver though. It may work just as well.

Wow ... those musictoyz guyz are fast ... got the Barber on Friday, paid a fortune for UPS brokerage fees though. >( Anyway, I really like the Silver LTD (thanks guitarman1), just what I was looking for, not a hint of buzzy high-end, nice and crunchy, quite transparent, Tone control is very subtle but since the pedal retains the original tone very well, it's there only for some fine adjustment, built like a tank. This one's a keeper.
Cheers!

Yeah I saw the internal pots, not messed with them yet, wanna see how it feels out-of-the-box for a bit first. I think everybody should get one of these before Mr. Barber realizes they are worth twice as much as what he's charging and jacks the prices up .... it's a STEAL at $125 ... I've paid WAAAAAY more then that for a lot of other booteek stuff that was not worth the $$$.
