I play Strat into MAZ 38 with a bunch of acoustic junkies. Coffee Shop volume. BL saved my role in the group by giving me useful, vibrant, active and responsive clean tones at very low volume. No combination of pedals could do it.
Before BL, I either sounded sterile and underpowered or I was way too loud.
It does color the tone, but in a good way for this group: Highs and Lows rolled off a bit, more compressed, but sits much more politely in the mix.
My advice is to anybody with a tube amp is to get one. After all, you put all kinds of things in front of the amp... Now explore the very cool tonal world between your amp and cabinet.
Don't get caught up in all the "tone sucking" hype. I wouldn't use it for everything, but so what. I don't use any device all the time.

Oddly, I do use a Z Brake for everything now! And I'm a guy that never uses a distortion pedal. The Brakes let me continue in that mode, 'cause I can get the driven amp sound at any volume. Even at the rare gig where we play with full drum kit hit hard, I use the Brake to get my volume just right. Thangs are awesome. I even use 'em at home backed down to bedroom level - changes the tone a bit but not in a bad way, and definitely more compressed, but I like it!
