I use the Stangray/212 one blue/one gold in small gigs but it all depends on the songs too.
I don't like using only one amp and always run an 18w in addition a larger watt amp. I will sometimes run my Rocket with the Stangray at the same time to blend the tones. The Rocket is a lower volume amp that breaks up quicker then the Stangray so together it works out well.

Hey Everyone,
I appreciate all of the feedback and wisdom in the many replies to my post. I finally got to try a Stangray yesterday. I took my Princeton that I gig with, and ran the Princeton stereo with the 'Ray to do a direct volume comparison. I found that at my lowest stage volume, the 'Ray sounds fine, although it is a little "finer" when turned up a little. I also got to try the 'Ray with a Z-Brake, and was pleasantly surprised to find that 2 clicks does make a volume difference, and the tone isn't destroyed. I got to try the 'Ray through a variety of speakers and pedals as well. Long story short, I am now confident that I can make a 'Ray work for me in low volume gigs. Now I just have to figure out how to raise the funds!

Last night I played a gig @ Sambuca in Nashville, which is a classy low/medium volume venue. Drums, keys, bass, vocalist, & me on guitar. I was playing a Tele & Strat all night - mostly on the neck pickups - running into a AnalogMan King of Tone into a Stang Ray head into a Z brake (set to 3) into a Z 2x12 cab. It sounded awesome. the tone was inspiring. got some feedback (the good kind) off the amp when I turned and faced it. Very nice experience indeed.

I have yet to try the ray, I am saving for one though. I am also a tele player and I have a a Maz 18 212. I also have a Brakelite on mine. With the brakelite I find that I can play to any room. It seems to be the case on alot of these amps, they don't start sounding great until you get the tubes working. Having said that, before I got the brakelite, the master volume on the Maz makes it usable for almost any venue.
